Attach thread to corner and work s c closely together along diagonal line and all around edge of handkerchief. Join with sl st.
Lace Corner. 1st row: Ch 5, skip 2 s c, s c in next s c (1 loop made), make 2 more loops, * then ch 5, skip 2 s c, tr in next s c, ch 5, skip 2 s c, s c in next s c, make 3 more ch-5 loops. Repeat from * across, ending row with 2 ch-5 loops, ch 2, skip 2 s c, d c in last s c. Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: S c in next loop, ch 5, s c in next loop, ** ch 5, s c in next loop, s c in tr, s c in next loop, * ch 5, s c in next loop. Repeat from * 2 more times. Then repeat from ** across, ending row with ch 2, d c in last loop. Ch 5, turn. 3rd row: S c in next loop, ** ch 5, s c in next loop, s c in each of 3 s c, s c in next loop, * ch 5, s c in next loop. Repeat from * once more. Then repeat from ** across, ending row with ch 5, s c in next loop, ch 2, d c in last loop. Ch 5, turn. 4th row: S c in next loop, ** ch 5, skip 1 s c, s c in each of next 3 s c, * ch 5, s c in next loop. Repeat from * 2 more times. Then repeat from ** across, ending row with ch 5, s c in next loop, ch 2, d c in next loop. Ch 5, turn. 5th row: S c in next loop, ** ch 5, skip 1 s c, tr in next s c, * ch 5, s c in next loop. Repeat from * 3 more times. Then repeat from ** across, ending row with tr, ch 5, s c in next loop, ch 2, d c in next loop (this completes the pattern—3 patterns in row). Ch 5, turn. 6th row: Make 3 ch-5 loops, * ch 5, tr in next loop, ch 5, s c in next loop, then make 3 more ch-5 loops. Repeat from * across, ending row with ch 2, d c in next loop (thus another row of patterns is started—2 patterns in the row, falling between those of previous row). Hereafter, work in pattern as before until 2 patterns are completed, having 2 sps less on each row. Then make another pattern, but having only 1 pattern on this row (falling between those of previous row), and working until only 1 loop remains. Break off.
Edging. Attach thread to last s c at diagonal line at corner. 1st rnd: * Ch 5, skip 2 s c, s c in next s c (1 loop made), make 2 more loops, ch 5, skip 2 s c, tr in next s c, ch 5, skip 2 s c, s c in next s c. Repeat from * across to within 14 s c from corner s c. Make 4 ch-5 loops, ch 5, skip 2 s c, then make s c, ch-5, s c in corner s c. Make 5 ch-5 loops, ch 5, skip 2 s c, tr in next s c, ch 5, skip 2 s c, s c in next s c. Continue in this manner around, making other corners as first corner was made, and making s c's and tr's in sps at lace corner. Join with sl st. 2nd rnd: Sl st to 3rd ch of ch-5 loop, * ch 5, s c in next loop, ch 5, s c in next loop, ch 5, s c in next loop, s c in tr, s c in next loop, ch 5, s c in next loop. Repeat from * across, making loop over loop and increase at corners, then continue around, making other corners as first corner was made. Join with sl st. 3rd rnd: Sl st to 3rd ch of ch-5 first made, * ch 5, s c in next loop, ch 5, s c in next loop, s c in each of next 3 s c, s c in next loop, ch 3, turn, skip 2 s c, s c in 3rd s c, ch 3, s c in last s c, ch 6, turn, s c in ch-5 loop where last s c of 5-s c group was made, ch 5, s c in next loop. Repeat from * around, making loop over loop and increasing at corners. Join. 4th rnd: * 6 s c in next loop, 3 s c in next loop, ch 3, s c in 3rd ch from hook (1 p made), 3 s c in same loop; in next loop make: 4 s c, ch-3 p, 4 s c; then 3 s c, p, 3 s c in next loop. Repeat from * around, making 3 s c, p, 3 s c in each loop at corners. Join and break off.
