There are slight variations to materials and instructions between these two versions of the same pattern in different publications. Two versions are below.
Romance in handkerchief edgings
Dainty edgings give a delightfully feminine air to handkerchiefs. Crochet these interesting new designs with J. & P. Coats Tatting Cotton, size 70, or the fine sizes from 50 to 100 of J. & P. Coats or Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet—either white or any of the lovely pastels. Use Milward's steel crochet hook No. 10, 12 or 14.

1st row: S c closely along edge of material and join with sl st to 1st s c made. 2nd row: Ch 3 (to count as d c) and make d c in each of next 2 s c, * ch 4, skip 3 s c, and make d c in each of next 5 s c. Repeat from * along row. End at corner with 5 d c, ch 3, 5 d c in each of next 5 s c, and continue pattern along edge. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of ch-3 first made. 3rd row: Sl st to ch 4, ch 3, 5 d c in ch-4 loop, * ch 4, 6 d c in next ch loop. Repeat from * along edge. In corner ch loop make 6 d c, ch 2, 6 d c, and continue along edge with pattern. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of ch-3 first made. Break off. 4th row: Attach colored thread to center of ch-4 loop, * ch 5, d c in 3rd d c of 6-d c group of previous row, ch 4, sl st in 1st ch for a p, d c in same d c, ch 5, s c in next ch-4 loop. Repeat from * to end of row. Join with sl st.

Two-color edging—suggest White and Salmon Pink.
1st row: With White, s c closely along rolled edge of handkerchief and join with sl st to 1st s c made. 2nd row: Ch 3 (to count as d c) and make d c in each of next 4 s c, * ch 4, skip 3 s c, and make d c in each of next 5 s c. Repeat from * along row. End at corner with 5 d c, ch 3, 5 d c in each of next 5 s c, and continue pattern along edge. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of ch-3 first made. 3rd row: Sl st to ch 4, ch 3 (to count as d c), 6 d c in ch-4 loop, * ch 4, 7 d c in next ch-loop. Repeat from * along edge. In corner ch-loop make 6 d c, ch 2, 6 d c, and continue along edge with pattern. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of ch-3 first made. Break off. 4th row: Attach Salmon Pink to center of ch-4 loop, * ch 5, d c in 4th d c of 7-d c group of previous row, ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook (1 p made), d c in same d c, ch 5, s c in next ch-4 loop. Repeat from * to end of row. Join with sl st.
