Use Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, size 30 or 50; or J. & P. Coats Tatting Cotton, size 70—and Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8, 9, 10 or 11.

To make braid. 1st row: * Ch 6, a 2 d c-cluster in 5th ch from hook. Repeat from * for more than length required. Turn. 2nd row: 1 s c between 1st, 4th and 5th clusters. * Make 2 clusters as before, 1 s c between next 2nd and 3rd clusters of last row. Repeat from * and fasten off.
Heading row: Attach thread between 1st 2 clusters, ch 11, d c between 2 clusters of next loop, * ch 8, d c between 2 clusters of next loop. Repeat from * across. Make similar heading on other edge.
Edging: Attach thread at beginning of 1 heading row. * 8 s c under next ch-8, 8 s c under next ch-8, 4 s c under half of next ch-8. Ch 10, join with sl st in 5th s c back from hook, ch 1, turn. Work 11 s c under ch-10 loop, 4 s c under rest of ch-8. Repeat from *, and fasten off. Next row: Attach thread to 9th s c from beginning of previous row. * Ch 5, a 2 d c-cluster in 1st st of ch, ch 1, skip 2 s c on loop, a 3 d c-cluster in next s c, a ch-6 p in top of d c. Repeat from * 2 more times. Ch 5, a 2 d c-cluster in 1st st of ch, 1 sl st in 4th s c on heading row. Sl st in back loops of each of next 9 s c. Repeat from beginning of row.
