Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, sizes 30 to 50.
J. & P. Coats Tatting Cotton.

Edging. Make a chain slightly longer than the length desired. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, d c in next ch. Repeat from * across. Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: * D c in next ch-1 sp, ch 1. Repeat from * until 3 sps are made, ** ch 7, skip 3 sps, d c in next sp, make 5 more sps as before. Repeat from ** across, ending row with 3 sps. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: * S c in each d c and in each ch-1 sp, then into ch-7 loop make: 1 s c, 1 half d c, 2 d c, 1 tr, 3 d tr, 1 tr, 2 d c, 1 half d c, 1 s c. Repeat from * across. Ch 5, turn. 4th row: * D c in 2nd d c of ch-7 loop, ch 5, skip tr, d c in next d tr, ch 5, skip 1 d tr, d c in next d tr, ch 5, skip tr, d c in next d c, ch 5, skip 4 s c, s c in each of next 3 s c, ch 5. Repeat from * across, ending row with s c in last s c. Ch 1, turn. 5th row: * 6 s c in next loop, into each of next 3 loops make: 3 s c, ch 5, s c in 5th ch from hook (1 p made), 3 s c; then, 6 s c in next loop, s c in center s c of 3-s c- group. Repeat from * across. Break off.

Insertion. Work exactly as for edging (1st to 5th rows incl.). Break off. 6th row: Attach thread to 1st p made, * ch 5, s c in next p. Repeat from * across. Break off. Attach thread to 1st sp of foundation row, and work to correspond with opposite side. Break off.
