To begin, make a chain slightly longer than desired length. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across. Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: * Skip 2 s c, d c in next s c, ch 2. Repeat from * across, turn. 3rd row: Sl st in 1st sp, ch 5 (to count as d c and ch-2), * d c in same sp, ch 2, d c in next sp, ch 2, d c in next sp, ch 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with d c in next sp, ch 2, d c in same sp (number of sps must be divisible by 5, plus 1). Ch 1, turn. 4th row: S c in 1st sp, ch 1, skip 2 sps, * 9 tr with ch-1 between, in next sp ch 1, skip 2 sps, s c in next sp (a fan), ch 1, skip 2 sps. Repeat from * across, ending row with s c in last sp, turn. 5th row: Sl st to 1st tr of fan, s c in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, s c in next sp. Repeat from * 6 more times (7 ch-3 loops in fan). S c in ch-1 sp of following fan and work as for previous fan. Continue in this manner across. Break off.
