Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 13 balls of any variegated, self-shading or solid color.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 1.

Thread is used double throughout.

Large Mat. Starting at center, ch 4, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: 8 s c in ring. 2nd rnd: 2 d c in each s c around. 3rd rnd: * D c in next d c, 3 d c in next d c. Repeat from * around (16 sts increased). Continue working in this manner, making increases over increases of previous rnd by making 3 d c in center d c of each 3-d c group (thus forming an octagon), until piece measures 9 inches in diameter. Break off. Make another piece same as this. Sew both pieces together with over-and-over stitches.

Medium Size Mat. Work exactly as for large mat until piece measures 8 inches (instead of 9 inches).

Small Mat. Work exactly as for large mat until piece measures 7 inches (instead of 9 inches).
