BAG 2309-A

When completed, bag measures 10 inches wide and about 8 inches deep at center.

Starting at one end, make a chain to measure about 14 inches long. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across for 11½ inches. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: S c in each s c across to within last s c, 2 s c in last s c (an increase). Ch 1, turn. Continue in this manner, increasing 1 s c at end of every 3rd row until piece measures 5 inches. This completes one half of bag. Do not break off, but make other half to correspond, decreasing to correspond with increases. Break off.

Gussets (Make 2). Starting at one long end, ch 45. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 1¾ inches. Break off.

Handle. Ch 9, turn. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. Hereafter repeat 2nd row, increasing 1 s c at both ends of 6th row and of one row every inch thereafter until there are 16 sts in the row. Continue to work without increasing until piece measures 6 inches. This completes one half of handle. Do not break off, but work other half to correspond, making decreases to correspond with increases made before. Break off.

Trimming. Circles. With color A Six Strand, ch 3. 1st rnd: 6 s c in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: * S c in each of next 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around. Continue to make s c around, increasing where necessary to keep work flat, until circle measures ¾ inch diameter. Break off. With color B, make 2 more circles same as this.

Place circles in position, as in illustration, having color A circle in center, and color B at sides. Using contrasting color, sew each circle in place with 8 single stitches radiating from center to last rnd of circle, having radiations at equal distances apart at outer edge (see illustration). With color C, work 3 stems in back stitch, making center stem 2 inches long and having both outer stems meet center stem ½ inch from bottom. Then work leaves along stems, using 5 straight stitches of varying lengths for each leaf, having the longest stitch in the center. With color A, sew 3 straight stitches across stems, at meeting point.

With Pearl Cotton work a row of s c across both increase and decrease edges (upper edges) of bag, and all around handle. Then, with color C, work a rnd of s c all around edges of bag, making 2 s c, ½ inch deep, at each corner. Work a rnd of s c, using color C, all around edges of handle. Fold bag in half, as in illustration. Place long edges of gussets against inner edges of sides of bag, beginning at lower fold, and sew in place, making a vertical pleat at center of each gusset. Line bag with lining material (if interlining is desired, line with crinoline before sewing in lining material). Sew ends of handle to inner edges of center top of bag, as in illustration. Sew one slide fastener along upper edge of bag, between left edge and center edge, having fastener open downward from center. Sew other slide fastener at right side to correspond.

BELT 2309-B

Beginning at one short end, ch 21. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 26 inches or length desired (make belt 2 inches less than waist measurement, to allow for 3½-inch buckle).

Buckle. To begin, ch 21. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each s c across, ending with 2 s c in last s c (an increase). Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 1¾ inches. This completes half of buckle. Do not break off, but work other half to correspond, making decreases to correspond with increases. Break off.

Trimming. Make 3 circles, each ½ inch in diameter, as for bag. Sew circles in place. Work leaves and stems as in illustration. Then work a row of s c all around edges of buckle.

Sew buckle to right front edge of belt, having buckle overlap belt ¾ inch. Fasten other end of buckle with hooks and eyes, allowing ¾ inch to overlap.
