Pot Holder Pattern #9009

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 2 balls of Red and 1 ball of Black.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8.

Gauge: 10 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 2 inches.

When completed, pot holder measures about 6 x 6½ inches.

Starting at bottom, with Red ch 62. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each ch across (60 d c in row). Ch 3, turn. 2nd and 3rd rows: D c in each d c across. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: Holding Black along top of 3rd row, and working over it so as to conceal it, make d c in each of 6 d c, thread over, insert hook in next st and draw loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops, drop Red at back of work, pick up Black and complete d c with Black, concealing unused color as before (8 Red d c made, counting turning ch-3 as 1 d c). Then make 1 Black d c in next d c, thread over, insert hook in next d c and draw loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops, drop Black at back of work, pick up Red and complete d c with Red. (Back of even-numbered rows is wrong side. Always drop colors on wrong side—back of work on even rows, front of work on uneven rows.) Then make 10 Red d c, carrying Black concealed in d c's and completing last d c with Black. Then make 8 Black d c, 7 Red d c, 2 Black d c, 7 Red d c, 8 Black d c, carrying unused color as before and completing last d c of a color-group with thread of next color-group. Drop Black at back of work and, letting it hang so that it is not carried to end of row, make 8 Red d c. Ch 3, turn. 5th row: D c over each of 6 d c, thread over, insert hook in next d c, thread over and draw through 2 loops, drop Red at front of work (wrong side), and complete d c with Black. Make 2 Black d c, concealing Red and completing 2nd d c with Red; make 13 Red d c, 2 Black d c, 7 Red d c, 2 Black d c, 4 Red d c, 2 Black d c, 10 Red d c, 2 Black d c, drop Black in front of work, letting it hang, and make 8 Red d c. Ch 3, turn. Hereafter follow chart until word "POTS" is completed, always carrying Black as far as necessary across row, to be picked up on following row. Break off Black. Ch 3, turn. Work 8 rows Red d c. Next row: Begin word "HOT" and continue to follow chart to end. Break off. This completes one side of pot holder.

Make a pad by cutting a square, slightly smaller than crocheted piece, of padding, flannel, or any soft material. Tack to wrong side of crocheted piece. Make another crocheted piece same as this. Do not break off but, with right side of this piece and padded side of first piece toward you, work a row of s c all around pot holder, working through both thicknesses. Break off. Attach Black and, with right side of work toward you, work a rnd of 3-d c clusters separated by ch-2 (to make a 3-d c cluster, make 3 d c in 1 s c, holding back the last loop of each d c on hook; thread over and draw through all loops on hook; ch 1 to fasten), making 2 clusters at corners and taking care to keep work flat. Join and break off. Attach Red and work s c in tip of each cluster and 2 s c under each ch-2. Break off.

Ring. Wind Black tightly around 2 fingers 10 times, thus forming ring. Work a rnd of s c closely together in ring. Join with sl st to 1st s c, then join securely to corner of pot holder. Break off.
