Bedroom Slippers Pattern #471

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 5 balls of Red.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8.
A pair of slipper soles.

Directions are given for medium size (sizes 6 and 7). Directions for small sizes (sizes 4 and 5) and large size (sizes 8 and 9) are given in parenthesis.

Starting at toe, ch 16, to measure about 1⅛ inches (small size, ch 14; large size, ch 20). 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. Hereafter pick up only the back loop of each s c. 2nd row: S c in each of 7 s c (small size, 6 s c; large size, 9 s c), 3 s c in next s c, s c in each of 7 s c (small size, 6 s c; large size, 9 s c). Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: S c in each s c across to within center s c of 3-s c group, 3 s c in center s c, s c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 3rd row until there are 57 s c in the row (small size, 55 s c; large size, 59 s c). On next row, work across 1st 28 s c (small size, 27 s c; large size, 29 s c). Then work as follows:

1st row: S c in each of 28 s c. Ch 1, turn. Hereafter work over these 28 s c only (small size, 27 s c; large size, 29 s c). 2nd row: S c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: S c in each s c across to within 2 s c from end of row, skip next s c, s c in last s c (thus 1 s c is decreased at instep). 4th row: S c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 3rd and 4th rows alternately until 20 s c remain. Work over these 20 s c only until piece reaches center back. Break off. Attach thread at opposite side, and work to correspond.

Sew the two short sides together at center back. Attach thread at center back at top edge of upper, ch 5, * skip 2 rows, d c in next row, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-2 with sl st to 3rd st of ch-5 first made. Then work 2 s c in each sp around. Break off.

Cord. Cut 12 strands of Red, each 2½ yds. long. Twist strands tightly, then double the twisted strands and give them a second twist in the opposite direction. Wind a thread 3 times around both ends of cord, 2½ inches in from ends, and tie securely. Cut ends, and trim evenly.

Sew upper to sole. Lace cord through the spaces at top of upper, and tie cord into a bow at center front.
