Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 14 balls of variegated or solid color.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 5.

Gauge: 3 squares make 1 inch; 5 rows of squares make 2 inches.

Front. Starting at upper edge, ch 71. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each ch across. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Thread over and insert hook between 1st 2 d c, bring it out between next and following d c, * draw loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops, twice; thread over and insert hook between same 2 d c where hook was brought out, bring it out between next 2 d c, draw loop through, thread over and complete as for a d c; d c in next d c, thread over and insert hook between this and next d c, bring it out between that and following d c. Repeat from * across, making last d c in turning ch. Ch 2, turn. 3rd row: * D c in each of next 2 d c, thread over and insert hook between last and next d c, bring it out between that and following d c, draw loop through and complete as for a d c. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. These last 2 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 2 rows alternately until piece measures 10 inches. Then dec. 1 d c at both ends of each row (to decrease 1 d c, work off 2 d c as 1 d c) until 30 d c in all have been decreased. Fasten and break off.

Back. Work exactly as for Front.

Handle and Gusset. Starting at one end, ch 43 and work as for Back until piece measures 45 inches. Fasten and break off.

Sew short sides of gusset together on wrong side. Place this seam against center of lower edge of Front, having wrong sides together and matching squares. Then pin the gusset across the remaining outer edges of Front, and sew in place. Sew gusset to Back to correspond.
