Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 1 ball of color 106 Sport Green, and 1 ball of color 84 Beige. Milward’s steel crochet hook No. 2.

Working both colors together as a double thread, ch 5. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: 7 s c in ring. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c of previous rnd. 3rd rnd: * 2 s c in 1st st, 1 s c in next and repeat from * around. 4th rnd: * S c in next st, ch 1, s c in same st, s c in next st, and repeat from * around. 5th rnd: * S c over ch-1, ch 2, s c in same sp, s c over single s c and repeat from * around. 6th rnd: * S c over ch-2, ch 2, s c in same sp. 2 s c in next single s c and repeat from * around. 7th rnd: * S c over ch-2, ch 2, sc in same sp. S c between next 2 s c, ch 2, s c in same sp. Repeat from * around. 8th rnd: * S c over ch-2, ch 2, s c in same sp. Repeat from * around. 9th to 11th rnds incl: Same as 8th rnd. 12th rnd: * S c over ch-2, ch 2, s c in same sp, s c over next ch-2, s c in same sp, s c in next st, and repeat from * around. 13th rnd: * S c over ch-2, ch 2, s c in same sp, s c over next ch-2, ch 2, s c in same sp, s c in s c of previous rnd, ch 2, s c in same st, and repeat from * around. 14th rnd: Same as 8th rnd. 15th rnd: Make 4 increases of 1 s c each, as done in 12th rnd, spaced evenly. Continue in pattern, without increasing, until work measures 7 inches in diameter. For a larger head-size add one or two more rnds, as necessary. Then take a plait from edge of crown to center so that work lies flat. Fasten together at edge of crown only, leaving plait open across end. Continue working same as 8th rnd until work measures 3 inches from fastening of plait to lower edge of crown.

Brim: 1st rnd: Work row of plain s c, making 3 s c to a pattern. 2nd rnd: S c into 1st s c of previous rnd, ch 1, s c in same st, * skip 1 s c, s c in next, ch 1, s c in same st, and repeat from * around. 3rd rnd: * S c over ch-1, ch 2, s c in same sp, repeat from * around. 4th and subsequent rnds: S c over ch-2, ch 2, s c in same sp, ** s c in next st, * s c over ch-2, ch 2, s c in same sp, repeat from * 2 more times.** Repeat between **’s around. Repeat this rnd until brim measures 2 inches. Break off.
