Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 2 balls of color 58 Dark Red. Milward’s steel crochet hook No. 4.
Crown: To begin, ch 3. 1st rnd: 6 s c in 2nd st of ch. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each st of previous rnd. 3rd rnd: * 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in next st, repeat from * around. 4th rnd: * 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of next 2 sts, repeat from * around. Continue increasing 6 times each rnd at equal distances apart. Do not make increases over increases of previous rnd. Work until crown measures 5¾ inches in diameter. For larger head-size work more rnds as necessary. Work 2 rnds without increasing. In next rnd increase 5 times, spaced at equal distances, work 2 rnds without increasing. Increase 4 times in next rnd, spacing evenly, work 3 rnds without increasing, and increase 4 times in next rnd. Then work evenly until crown measures 4½ inches from center to edge. Increase 6 times in next rnd. * Work 1 rnd even. Increase 7 times on next rnd. Repeat from * once and work 3 rnds without increasing. * Then decrease 10 times in next rnd, work 1 rnd even, repeat from * once. Then decrease every 11th st 12 for 2 rnds. Work even until crown measures 7¼ inches, from center to edge. Sl st last st, ch 1, turn.
Brim: Use thread double and work in back loop of sts (this row only), making 1 s c in each st and increasing in every 5th st. Join with sl st, ch 1, turn. Work 5 rows even, taking up both loops of sts and always joining each row at end with sl st, ch 1 and turn for entire brim. 7th row: Increase in every 12th st. 8th to 11th rows incl: Work even. 12th row: Increase in every 20th st. Work 2 rows even, and for last row work over millinery wire, and fasten off.
Bow: With thread double, ch 13. S c in 2nd ch from hook and s c in each st of ch. Ch 1, turn. Repeat making s c over s c until piece measures 6½ inches long. Form into bow and wrap thread 15 times around center of bow. Fasten off.
Cord: With 3 strands of 32 threads each, make a braided cord long enough to go around hat. Fasten off under bow, placing bow at the front. Drape the crown in a downward fold just above the cord.
