Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 2 balls of color 106 Sport Green. Milward’s steel crochet hook No. 4.

Crown: To begin, ch 3. 1st rnd: 6 s c in 2nd st of ch. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each st of previous rnd. 3rd rnd: * 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in next st, and repeat from * around. 4th rnd: * 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of next 2 sts, and repeat from * around. Continue increasing 6 times in each rnd at equal distances apart. Do not make increases over increases of previous rnd. Work until crown measures 5¾ inches in diameter (or more for larger head-size). Work next rnd without increases. In next rnd increase 5 times spaced at equal distances, * work next rnd even, and in next rnd make 4 increases. Repeat from * once. Continue making 1 s c in each st until crown measures 6 inches from center to edge. Make 1 sl st, turn. (Will measure more if additional rnds were added above).

Brim: Use thread double and work 1 s c in back loop of each st. 2nd to 7th rnds incl: 1 s c in each st, taking up both loops of st of previous rnd. 8th rnd: Increase 4 times at equal spaces. 9th rnd: Work even. 10th rnd: Work even over 6 inches then increase 1 st every 2 inches for 6 times and work even to finish rnd. 11th to 14th rnds incl: Work even. Fasten off. Turn brim up all around, flaring at the front.
