"PURITAN" MERCERIZED CROCHET
AND KNITTING COTTON
1 400-yd. Ball Cream.
"STAR" PEARL COTTON, SIZE 5
1 60-yd. Ball Red or any Color desired for trim.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 4.

Wind off 200 yds. on a spool and work mitt with double strand of thread.
With Cream, ch 39, d c in 4th st from hook, 1 d c in each remaining ch, ch 3, turn.
2nd Row—1 d c in each d c, ch 3, turn.
3rd & 4th Rows—Increase 1 st at the beginning of each row, ch 3, turn.
5th, 6th & 7th Rows—1 d c in each d c, ch 3, turn. Repeat the last 5 rows, ch 3, turn.
13th, 14th & 15th Rows—Increase 1 st at beginning of each row, ch 3, turn.
16th Row—1 d c in each of the next 28 d c leaving remaining sts free for thumb, ch 3, turn.
17th Row—Decrease 1 st at beginning of row and work 1 d c in each d c. (To decrease: thread over needle, insert in next st and pull loop through, thread over and pull through 2 loops, thread over, insert in next st, pull through, thread over and pull through 2 loops, thread over and pull through 3 loops.)
18th, 19th, 20th & 21st Rows—Work even.
22nd Row—Decrease 1 st at the beginning and end of row.
23rd Row—Work even.
24th & 25th Rows—Same as 22nd row.
26th Row—Ch 2, thread over needle, skip 1 st, insert needle in next st and pull loop through, thread over and pull through 2 loops, insert needle in next st and pull loop through, thread over and pull through all loops on needle at one time, 1 d c in each d c to within the last 3 sts of end, thread over, insert needle in next st, pull through, thread over and pull through 2 loops, insert needle in next st, pull through, thread over and pull through all loops on needle at one time, s c in end st.
27th Row—Same as 26th row, break thread.
THUMB. Attach thread in same space with last st at palm of mitt, ch 3, 1 d c in each of the next 15 d c, ch 3, turn.
Next Row—D c in same space, then work 1 d c in each d c decreasing last st, ch 3, turn.
Next Row—Decrease 1 st at beginning of row.
Next 2 Rows—Decrease 1 st at beginning and end of each row.
Next Row—Same as 27th row, break thread.
Work another section in same manner.
With Red and using a single strand of thread, crochet the two sections together with a row of s c working a row of s c across each side of cuff, ch 18, sl st in same space and work 35 s c over ch for loop.
Embroider "Hot Mitt" on back of mitt as illustrated.
