Cross Stitch Squares Pot Holder Patterns

Cross stitch design worked on a 5½" square crocheted back. These two, with more designs, are pictured at the bottom of page. POTS AND PANS or any of these cross stitch designs are to be embroidered on crocheted squares. The charts show symbols for a patriotic combination but may be in any desired shades. The sets can be done in patriotic colors by embroidering the symbols on charts marked X in blue and O is red on a white background, and with the edge on one holder in red and in blue on the other.

MATERIALS: About 80 yards white Enterprise Yarn and 15 yards each of Red and Blue for a pair, the edge of one holder red, the other blue.

A rack that may be used for any pair of holders is pictured at right. Just a few yards of Enterprise Yarn, a bone ring and a pair of the smallest size cup hooks—it will add style and appearance to your set, as a gift.

THE HOLDERS:

With white, ch 26, 25 sc on chain.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc. Repeat this row 23 times, making 25 rows in all and forming a square. Fasten off.
Join color to last sc, * (ch 1, 1 sc in center of next rib) repeated to next corner, (ch 1, 1 sc in next second st) repeated to next corner. Repeat from *. Fasten off.
Select cross stitch design desired and embroider on holder. For best results when embroidering, twist yarn slightly before pulling through crocheted background for a neat stitch. Each square of the pattern is a sc stitch across the holder and a row the other way.
Steam and press holders into true squares and sew bone ring to corner.

THE RACK:

(Size approx. 3¾ inches by 3¾ inches.) With white ch 19, 18 sc on ch. * Ch 1, turn, 1 sc thru both loops of each sc, repeat from * once, ch 1, turn, sk 1 st, 1 sc in next 17, ch 1, turn, sk 1, 1 sc in next 16. Continue working same as last row, decreasing 1 st at beginning of each row until one st remains on hook (20 rows in all). Fasten off. Work the cross stitch design (see Chart). Line Rack with muslin cut slightly smaller than the Rack, stitching to top sides only.
Cut a heavy piece of cardboard to fit the crocheted rack and insert between front and lining, then stitch lining to front.
Sew bone ring to top. Screw 2 small cup hooks through crocheted rack into cardboard inch from side and 1 inch from bottom on each side and hang holder on each hook.
