A colorful set of Dinner Place Mats with matching Centerpiece. Crochet it in colorful porcelain pastels to match your dishes. The Original was in Ivory with Light Blue "V’s” for the design and edging, but Green, Rose, Dark Blue, or Brown on pastel backgrounds may suit your fancy.

MATERIALS:
Centerpiece: (12" x 20")
1 Ball—Design Color, 2 Balls Background Color.
Set of four Mats: (11" x 16½")
3 Balls—Design Color, 6 Balls Background Color.
(If 6 Mats are required purchase 5 balls of design color and 9 of background color.)

CENTERPIECE:

Row 1: With Old Ivory, ch 56, sk last st, 1 sc in each remaining st (55 sc).
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc through both loops of each sc.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc, in last sc but hold the 2 loops of sc on hook, draw Blue through these 2 loops, completing first sc. Now working over Old Ivory and starting end of Blue, make 1 sc in next sc, * 1 sc at base of next sc in row below (a long sc), 1 sc at base of next sc in second row below (an extra long sc), a long sc in next sc in row below, 1 sc in next sc, holding 2 loops of it on hook. Pull Old Ivory taut and draw it up through these 2 loops, completing last Blue sc. 1 sc in next sc working over Blue, holding the 2 loops of this sc on hook, draw Blue up through these 2 loops, completing Old Ivory sc. Repeat from * to end of row, ending with a completed Old Ivory sc. (9 pattern "V’s" in row.) Drop Blue, but do not cut.
Row 4: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc (55 sc). Repeat this row 3 times.
Row 8: Pull Blue up end of last 4 rows and through the loop on hook (l-ch). Turn and working over Old Ivory, make an extra long sc at base of end sc in second row below, a long sc at base of next sc in row below, 1 sc in next sc joining Old Ivory through the 2 loops of this sc, 1 sc in next sc, * join Blue, 1 sc, 1 long sc, 1 extra long sc, 1 long sc and 1 sc, join Old Ivory, 1 sc. Repeat from * 7 times. Join Blue, 1 sc, 1 long sc and 1 extra long sc. Drop Blue. Repeat Row 4, four times.
Row 13: Ch 1, turn, pull up Blue and working over it, make this row similar to Row 3.
Repeat from Row 4 until work is 21 rows of pattern "V’s" long.
EDGE: After sc in Old Ivory at end of final pattern row, draw Blue through loop (l-ch), fasten off Old Ivory, and work down long side of Doily with sc over edge. Allow 9 sc across every 2 pattern rows, but skip about 3 sc altogether, so that from the l-ch at start (which stands for 1 sc), to the sc in corner st at opposite end of row, there will be 91 sc. 2 more sc in corner st, 1 sc in each st across end. 3 sc in corner st. Continue around in same way. End with 2 sc in starting corner, sl st in first l-ch.
Row 2: * Ch 2, 1 dc in next third sc, ch 5, sl st in fourth ch st from hook for a p, ch 1, 1 dc in same sc, ch 2, 1 sc in next third sc. * Repeat from * 14 times to first of 3 sc at next corner. Ch 2, 1 dc in next (corner) sc, ch 5, p, ch 1, 1 dc in same st, ch 2, 1 sc in next sc. Repeat from * to * 9 times to next corner. Make this corner the same as last one and continue around in same way. Fasten off.

PLACE MATS:

Place Mats are worked like the Centerpiece, except start with a ch of 50, and work 17 rows of pattern "V’s".

EDGE: With Blue, ch 1 and make 72 sc to next corner, 2 more sc in corner, 1 sc in each sc across end, 3 sc in corner. Continue around in same way. Make second row similar to Centerpiece.
