Colonial Rug and Chair Seat Set Patterns

A novel way to make a firm heavy set in oval or round shapes. It’s a crocheted cord, made to the desired length, sewed around the center panel—stripes or solid colors are simple to do and the procedure explained lessens possibility of distortion after making.

The cord is crocheted to almost its required length—sewed around the center—if short, more stitches may be added to close the ends.

The original was edged in Black with stripes in two shades of Blue and four of Yellow, placed as explained in instructions. Combinations of Rose, Green or Blue, or a single tone, may be more desirable for your color scheme.

The Curtain Tie Backs to match the set may be made from the yarn left over after making the chair seat. The picture shows the appearance of the cords, that form the rows in the rug and seat cover, before sewing together.

A Round Rug may be made by adding rows of cord to the seat cover from the same instructions.

Materials: Enterprise Yarn—(for the original oval Rug).
4 Balls Baby Blue 280.
3 Balls Light Blue 282.
4 Balls Black 299.
1 Ball Each—Yellow 260, Gold 262, Orange 264 and Dark Orange 266.
Chair Seat—1 Ball each of Baby Blue, Light Blue, Orange and Dark Orange.

Sizes: Rug approximately 24" x 37".
Chair Seat 14½" round.

RUGCenter Panel: With Baby Blue, ch 75, skip last 3 sts, 4 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 70 sts, 9 dc in next (end) st. Now, working down opposite side of starting chain, make 1 dc in next 70 sts, 4 dc in next st, sl st in top of next 3-ch.
Row 2: Ch 3, 1 dc in same place, * (2 dc in next st) 4 times, 1 dc in next 70 dc, (2 dc in next st) 4 times, * 3 dc in next st. Repeat from * to *. 1 dc in next st, sl st in first 3-ch.
Row 3: Ch 3 and work another row of dc, widening enough at ends to keep work flat. Fasten off.

CORD: With Light Blue, ch 2, making first st twice usual length. 1 sc, 1 hdc and 5 dc in this long st. Cup this work so the right side of sts is inside cup. Then working in back loops only, make 1 dc in sc (seventh st from hook). 1 dc in hdc, (1 dc in each dc) repeated around and around, until cord is long enough to reach around Center Panel. Be careful not to add or drop sts. Always have 7 dc in each row. Drop thread, but do not cut.

With Center Panel wrong-side-up, sew Cord around the edge of it, using the yarn or preferably a heavy thread. Go through both loops of dc on edge of Center and through the same lengthwise row or rib of dc on Cord. Keep the Cord untwisted and press flat with fingers, so that a lengthwise dc-row is on sewing edge of Cord. Start sewing at starting end of Cord so that sts can be ripped or added at finishing end to make it exactly fit around Center. When exact length of Cord can be determined, make (2 hdc, 1 sc and 1 sl st) around end of Cord, cut yarn 8 inches from work and pull through loop, tight. Thread to a large needle and sew 2 ends of Cord together. Make a second Cord in Medium Blue and whip to first. Skip 2 lengthwise dc-ribs across back of first Cord, then sew to the next rib. This leaves 3 lengthwise ribs (rows) across front of Cord on right side between stitchings. Keep work flat while sewing.

Continue in the same way. Make the third Cord in Baby Blue, next in Yellow, then one each in Baby Blue, Gold, Baby Blue, Orange, Baby Blue, Dark Orange and Baby Blue. Next 2 in Light Blue and a border of 4 in Black.

Flowers: With Light Blue, ch 6, sl st in starting st to form a ring, * ch 6, 3 tr in sixth st from hook, holding the last loop of each tr on hook, thread over and pull through all 4 loops on hook at once for a Cluster, ch 3, sl st in Cluster for a p, ch 6, sl st at base of Cluster, 1 sc in ring. Repeat from * 5 times (6 petals). Fasten off.

Make 6 French Knots in Dark Orange in center of Flower,—one at the base of each petal. Use a single strand of yarn, wrapped twice around needle for each Knot. Tack this Flower in middle of Center Panel of Rug. Make 2 more Flowers with Knots in Yellow and sew one at each end of Center Panel. Make 2 more Flowers with Knots in Orange and sew on Panel in spaces between other Flowers.

CHAIR SEATCenter: With Baby Blue, ch 6, sl st in starting st to form a ring. Ch 3, 17 dc in ring, sl st in top of 3-ch.
Row 2: Ch 3, dc in same place, (2 dc in next dc) repeated around. Sl st in 3-ch.
Row 3: Ch 3, dc in same place, (1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next) repeated around. Sl st in first 3-ch. Fasten off.
Make and sew a Cord as for rug in Light Blue around Center, then 1 row each of Baby Blue, Gold, Baby Blue, Dark Orange, Baby Blue and Light Blue. Finish with a border of 2 rows of Black. Sew a Flower with Knots in Dark Orange on Center.

Ties: With Black make 2 chains, each 90 sts long. Tack the chains at center of each to back edge of Seat Cover. Line and Pad Seat Cover if desired with dark material.

Curtain Tie Backs: With Baby Blue, make a 14 inch length of Cord. Close end with 2 hdc, 1 sc and 1 sl st, (1 sl st in next second st) 3 times. Fasten off. Make a similar Cord of Light Blue and Gold.

Cover two 1 inch Bone Rings, closely, with sc in Light Blue. Sew one ring to each end of triple Cords, placing Baby Blue Cord at top, Light Blue at bottom and Gold between. Make a Flower, with Knots in Gold, and tack over one joining of Cords and Ring.
