This beautiful rug has a crocheted background with the border in the matching shade for your room and a lighter tone or neutral-colored center panel. A fluffed fringe tied to the face of the rug outlines the scalloped edge of the center panel and outer edge of the border. A crocheted braid used instead of the fringe is also shown.

Center panel may be any shape desired directions for panel as a rectangle, diamond, or oval are given, and make beautiful rugs in two tone or single color combinations. Try it in two tones of your room color scheme Dark and light blues, greens or maroon and dusty pink with the embroidery in the border color for the needlepoint-like motif.

*A partial ball each of the colors required for embroidery.

All the rugs are worked in sc. At end of each row ch 1 to turn. In changing color, pick up the second color in completing the last st of first color.

EMBROIDERY: The color chart for embroidery in center of rug is shown below. A single shade (to match border) may be used if wanted—the result is quite pleasing.
Start design at center of rug and work to right and left, to balance design in center. Thread a single strand of desired color of Enterprise Yarn to a dull pointed needle. Twist occasionally as needed to keep size of cross stitches alike. Make a cross stitch, in each stitch of each row, in the color shown in chart. The symbols in chart indicate colors as in picture of rug. Stretch and pin rug right-side-down on a large padded board or table and steam with a wet cloth and hot iron, then press through a dry cloth until perfectly dry.

FLUFFY FRINGE: Cut a strip of stiff cardboard 15/16 inch wide. Holding the inside ends of 5 balls of color A, as one strand wind them around cardboard, and cut along one edge. Lay out flat, and pick up 5 pieces to gather into bunches of 25 strands each. Thread a strand of same color to a large needle. Make a small stitch through edge of rug. Pull through until an end 2 inches long is left. Make a second stitch to the right, close to first one (as for Bearskin rugs), forming a loop between them. Insert a 25-strand tuft through this loop. Pull loop down tight across center of tuft. Grasp ends of stitching thread, pull tight, and tie a square knot. Trim ends even with tuft. Double tuft into a tassel and press down. Continue around edge of rug, tying tufts every ¾ inch. Tie tufts around the scallops on inside of border.

FOR BRAID TRIM RUG

The same rug with a crocheted braid to cover the joining of the center panel to the border and a tied-on fringe will be preferred by some. The simple pattern shown below is quickly made; the beautiful result on the scalloped center panel is pictured; and the other shapes are equally pretty.

MATERIALS: ENTERPRISE Cotton and Knitting Yarn
8 Balls of color A for center, braid fringe.
6 Balls of color B for border.

Material for embroidery—Same as for scalloped center rug.
Crochet Body of Rug as shown, for desired shape.

FRINGE: To be worked in each stitch before Braid is attached. Using color B, wrap single thread around a cardboard 1¾ inches wide, then cut yarn along one edge of cardboard with sharp scissors or razor blade, thus making each thread 3½ inches long. Working on right side of rug — place two ends of one thread together evenly, pull looped center through one st on edge of rug, bring loose ends through loop and pull taut.

BRAID: With color A ch 5, 1 sc in first st, (chain 4, turn, 1 sc in last sc) repeat for required length to reach around scallops of inside panel. Make a second length for outside edge of rug.
Sew Braid over outside edge of rug and outline of scallops of center panel, tacking down each point on both sides of Braid.

Tieing the Fringe on this rug follows the same procedure used to make Shaggy Bearskin Rugs. The tassels (generally longer) are tied to the face of heavy cotton rug backs on which the design to be followed is marked.

FLORAL PATTERNS IN PUFF STITCH

The picture above and chart at right is the cross stitched center for the Fluffy Fringed Rug. It shows this same cross stitch design, crocheted in Puff Stitch—the relatively small embroidered design, enlarges to the center of a rug 51 puffs wide by 95 puffs long (approx. 21" x 45").

Almost any design for cross stitch can be used for the motif for a rug, mat, chair seat, etc.

Chart shows center of rug only.

Start with 2 puff rows of border color. Work border color on 2 puffs at each end of next 10 rows and pick up the 13th row (first row shown on chart) for 95 puff length.

The original was an ivory background (12 Balls) with border in Lt. Green (2 Balls). The center motif may be a single color — to match the border (one Ball Additional). If done in the bright floral colors as indicated on the chart for color placement, a ball each of Orchid, Rose, Tearose and Dark Green will be needed.
