The panel shown here as a chair set and place doily is embroidered in cross stitch and crocheted of Enterprise Yarn. Used for the base of the design it may be "built around” for rugs, table mats, or other useful household things.
The cross stitch embroidery can be repeated around the edge of a rug—or used only across the ends—as a stripe or for the center motif. On larger pieces the borders of the panel can be crocheted colored stripes, or done in cross stitch.
The adaptation of the panel to other things can be figured out by reading the instructions for use of the panel as basic design for the place doily.
This is only one of the many cross stitch designs that can be worked in Enterprise Yarn on crocheted backgrounds.
CHAIR SET
MATERIALS: The chair set pictured had an Ivory background (3 balls), was edged in Rose 292 (1 ball) and a ball each of 284 Blue, 260 Yellow, 264 Orange and 274 Green, for the design.
With the design in a single color—matching the edge—2 balls of edging color will be needed.
DIMENSIONS:
Chair Back Doily, approximately 15" x 17½"
Arm Rest Doily, approximately 5¾" x 15"
LARGE PANEL—Make 3—one for center of chair back—two for arm rest doilies. With Ivory, ch 19, 18 sc on chain. (Ch 1, turn, 18 sc) repeated for total of 62 rows. Fasten off.
EDGE—Join Ivory with 2 sc in first sc of last row, * sc in next 16 sts, 3 sc in next (corner) st, sc in end of each row to next corner, * 3 sc in corner st. Repeat from * to *. 1 more sc in starting corner, sl st in first sc.
Row 2: Ch 7, dc in same st, * (ch 1, dc in next second sc) 9 times, ch 4, dc in next (corner) sc, ch 1, dc in next sc, (ch 1, dc in next second sc) repeated to first of 3 sc in corner, ch 1, * (dc, ch 4 and dc) in corner sc. Repeat from * to *. Sl st in third st of first 7-ch. Fasten off.
Row 3: Join edging color to last l-ch space, ** ch 1, dc in 4-ch corner space, (ch 2, dc in same space) 4 times, ch 1, sc in next l-ch space, * ch 1, (dc, ch 2 and dc) in next space, ch 1, sc in next space. Repeat from * across side. Repeat from ** around piece. Fasten off.
EMBROIDERY—See the cross-stitch layout shown below. Embroider in cross stitch, using a single strand of yarn, threaded to a dull point needle.
SMALL PANEL—Same as large panel but only 54 sc-rows long. Repeat 3 rows of edge.
Make 2 small panels and tack to large panel, one on each side. Use matching sewing thread, working on back with neat over-and-over stitches. Place tops of panels even and tack adjoining points of "edge" together.
PLACE MAT
MATERIAL—Each doily will require just less than a ball for the background and a few yards each of the colors for the design and edge—(if in a single color, 40 yards for embroidery and edge).
PANEL—Make as for chair set for 50 rows, including edge. Fasten off. Working across one long side, join Ivory to third sc at right-hand corner, ch 5, dc in next second sc, (ch 2, dc in next second sc, ch 2, dc in next third sc) 8 times, (ch 2, dc in next second sc) 4 times.
Row 2: Ch 5, turn, dc in next dc, (ch 2, dc in next dc) 19 times, ch 2, dc in third st of end 5-ch. Repeat this row 16 times (total of 18 rows). Fasten off.
Join Ivory to corner sc on Panel and work around mesh with (3 sc in next sp (=space)) 17 times, 2 sc in corner sp, 3 sc in center st, 1 sc in bal. of sp, (sc in next dc, sc in next sp, sc in dc, 2 sc in next sp) 8 times, (sc in next dc, sc in next sp) 4 times, 3 sc in center st of corner sp. 2 sc in bal. of sp, (3 sc in next sp) 17 times, sl st in corner sc of Panel. Fasten off.
BORDER—Join Ivory to next corner, ch 7, dc in same st, then across end of doily, ch 1, dc in next sc, (ch 1, dc in next second sc) 25 times, ch 1, (dc, ch 4 and dc) in next (corner) sc, (ch 1, dc in next second sc) 37 times, ch 4, dc in next (corner) sc, ch 1, dc in next sc, (ch 1, dc in next second sc) 36 times, ch 1, sl st in third st of first 7-ch. Fasten off.
Row 2: Join to last l-ch sp, ** ch 1, dc in next (corner) sp, (ch 2, dc in same sp) 4 times, ch 1, sc in next sp, * ch 1, (dc, ch 2 and dc) in next sp, ch 1, sc in next sp. Repeat from * across side. Repeat from ** around doily. Fasten off.
EMBROIDERY—Work same as small panel (see cross-stitch layout), start at stem end at bottom on second row of sc, counting from outside of sc edge row, with panel at left.
If Edge and Embroidery are to match, work all symbols in same shade.
This is the cross-stitch design for large panel of chair back. For small panels (and place mat) omit large rose at left end, and fill out fifth petal of blue flower, next to it by using 9 cross stitches placed exactly the same as adjacent blue petals.
