The edgings shown on these pages were all crocheted of "Silkine" Crochet Cotton in size 50, with a No. 14 steel crochet hook. However, any of the following threads may be used, depending on the use the worker wishes for the finished piece, and the number of hook mentioned is the most practical. With "Silkine" Pearl Cotton No. 3 use a No. 5 hook; with size 5, use a No. 6 hook. With Star Crochet Cord use a No. 5 hook. With "Silkateen-Sansilk" use a No. 8 steel hook. These threads come in many attractive colors and tones, so the edgings may fit in with the existing color scheme. Gem Mercerized Crochet Cotton is also lovely. Gem or De Luxe Ready-Shrunk Mercerized Cotton is appropriate when coarser edgings are desired. With this use a No. 7 hook.
Medallions: Ch 12, j with a sl st, * ch 40, 1 sc in r, ch 35, 1 sc in r, (ch 30, 1 sc in r) twice, ch 35, 1 sc in r. Repeat from * once. 2nd row: (6 sc, 3 h tr, 10 tr, 1 h tr and 1 sc) over half of 40-ch loop, ch 1. Now turn this half of petal over so that the tops of sts are next the other half of ch loop, and work back to center r with 1 sc in each st, working over the ch and into the back loops only of sts just made. 1 sl st in r center, pulled tightly. (5 sc, 2 h tr, 9 tr, 1 h tr, and 1 sc) over half of next loop, ch 1 and work back to center with sc in same way, 1 sl st in r. The next 2 loops will have (5 sc, 1 h tr, 7 tr, 1 h tr, and 1 sc) over half of each. The next will have the same number of sts as 2nd loop. Then repeat from start of row for 2nd half of flower. Fasten off. The wrong side of flower is used as right side. Center ring: Wind thread 15 times around hook, sl off and cover with 16 sc, 1 sl st in 1st sc, (ch 5, 1 sc in next) 16 times. Fasten off and sew in center of flower. Join to tip of 1 longest petal, * (ch 7, 1 sc in 5th st from hook for a 5-ch p) twice, ch 3, 1 d tr in next petal, (ch 7, a 5-ch p) twice, ch 9, p, ch 3, 1 tr in same petal, (ch 7, p) twice, ch 3, 1 sc in next, (ch 7, p) twice, ch 3, 1 sc in next, (ch 7, p) twice, ch 3, 1 tr in next, ch 7, p, ch 9, p, ch 7, p, ch 3, 1 d tr in same petal, (ch 7, p) twice, ch 3, 1 sc in next or longest petal. Repeat from * once. 2nd row: Ch 12, 1 d tr in next d tr, * ch 9, 1 d tr between next 2nd and 3rd p, ch 13, 1 d tr in same st, ch 6, 1 d tr in next tr, (ch 10, 1 d tr in next sc between p-loops) twice, ch 10, 1 d tr in next tr, ch 6, 1 d tr between next 2 p, ch 13, 1 d tr in same st, ch 9, 1 d tr in next d tr, ch 9, 1 tr in next sc, ch 9, 1 d tr in next d tr. Repeat from *, j last 9-ch in row to 3rd st of 1st 12-ch. 3rd row: (Ch 5, 1 sc under next loop) twice, ch 5, 1 sc in next d tr, 3 more 5-ch loops over next sp. Ch 5, 1 sc under next loop, ch 5, 1 sc in 7th st of same 13-ch, ch 7, 1 sc in same st, ch 5, 1 sc under ch, ch 5, 1 sc in next d tr, ch 5, 1 sc under next ch, ch 5, 1 sc in next d tr. Make 3 loops over each of next 3 sps, 2 over next. Make this corner the same as 1st one. 3 loops over each of next 4 sps and continue on around. 4th row: Sl st to center of 1st loop, turn, ch 4, 1 h tr in next loop, (ch 2, 1 h tr in next) repeated to 7-ch loop at corner, ch 6, 1 h tr in this same loop, (ch 2, 1 h tr in next loop) repeated around, adding the 6-ch loop at each corner. Fasten off. Make another medallion, completing 1 long side and 1 short side of last row. In place of the 6-ch loop at 3rd corner, ch 16. Now with wrong side of all work up, 1 sl st in 6-ch loop at 1 corner of previous medallion, 15 sc over all but last 2 sts of ch, 1 sl st in 2nd st of ch from end, ch 2, 1 h tr in same corner loop with last h tr, * (ch 2, 1 h tr in next loop) 3 times, ch 28, turn, 1 sl st in last h tr, turn, (4 sc in 1 h tr, 5 tr, 1 h tr and 4 sc) over half of loop, ch 1, sk 3 h tr up side of 1st medallion, 1 sl st in next h tr. Now turn this half of loop over towards ch of other half and work back with 1 sc in back loop of each st, working over ch the same as petals in flower. 1 sl st under last h tr, ch 2, 1 h tr in next loop. Repeat from * 3 times. (Ch 2, 1 h tr in next loop) twice, ch 16, 1 sl st across in corner of 1st medallion, 15 sc over 14-ch, 1 sl st in 15th st of ch, ch 2, 1 h tr in same corner loop with last h tr, and then complete medallion. Make and j enough medallions for required length. Remember to make all js with medallions wrong-side-up.
