The medallion may be made of Star Crochet Cotton, or "Silkine" Crochet Cotton, in any size suitable for the use. If it is to be used in very coarse linen, then size 40 or 50 cotton should be used. This medallion is very lacy and dainty if made of size 100. Gem Mercerized Crochet Cotton is another suitable choice.
Square Motif
1st row: Ch 6, j for r, ch 1, 2 s sts in r, (ch 3 for p, 3 s sts in r) 3 times, p, j to 1st s st. 2nd row: Ch 12, * 1 s st in 2nd st from hook, 1 tr in next st, 1 h d tr in next st, 1 d tr in next st, 1 h tr tr in next st, 1 tr tr in next st, 1 l tr (thread over hook 4 times) in next st, 1 d tr between next 2 p of 1st row, ch 8. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st. 3rd row: Ch 12, 1 d tr in 7th st from hook, ch 3, 1 d tr in same st with last d tr, * ch 6, catch back in 3rd st for p, ch 3, sl st in point of petal, ch 6, catch back in 3rd st for p, ch 12, 1 d tr in 9th st from hook, holding last st of each on hook, 1 tr tr between next 2 petals, work off last st of tr tr with the 2 sts on hook, ch 3, 1 d tr in center of corner loop. Repeat from * around. Join in center of 1st loop with sl st. 4th row: Ch 4, sl st back in 3rd st from hook for p, * 4 s sts in next sp, 3 s sts in corner st, 4 s sts in next sp, p, (3 s sts in next sp, turn the p on ch toward the center, 3 s sts in same sp) twice, p. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st. Fasten off. Make 4 more motifs like one just made. Join one to each corner as last row is being made, leave off the p of the 2 outside sides.
Triangle Motif
Join cotton to the s st over point of a petal of square motif, (ch 11, 1 s st in 2nd st from hook, 1 h tr, 1 tr, 1 h d tr, 1 tr, 1 h tr, 1 s st, 1 sl st on ch, ch 9, 1 s st in 2nd st from hook, 1 h tr, 1 tr, 1 h d tr, 1 tr, 1 s st, 1 sl st on ch-9) twice, ch 11, 1 s st in 2nd st from hook, 1 h tr, 1 tr, 1 h d tr, 1 tr, 1 s st, 1 sl st on ch-11. Fasten off. Join cotton to 2nd st from corner of same side of square motif, (ch 6, sl st in point of petal) 5 times, ch 6, sl st to 2nd st from next corner, on same side of motif, turn, 4 s sts over ch-6, ch 1, j to p of corner square motif, ch 1, sl st in last s st, 3 s sts over same ch, * (4 s sts, p, 4 s sts over next ch) twice, 2 s sts in point of 3rd leaf. Repeat from * down 2nd side, 4 s sts, j to p of square motif as to 1st motif on the side, 4 s sts. Fasten off. Repeat for other 3 spaces. Join cotton to 2nd st from top on side of square motif next to the triangle motif, ch 7, sl st back in 3rd st from hook for p, ch 5, sl st in the s st at point of triangle, ch 8, sl st back in 3rd st from hook for p, ch 5, sl st to 2nd st from corner of the square motif in next corner. Turn, 6 s sts over ch to p, 5 s sts over same ch, 1 s st in s st at point of triangle, 5 s sts over next ch to p, 6 s sts over same ch. Fasten off. Fill in on other 3 sides. Join to corner of motif with sl st, then ch 5, * sk 2 sts, 1 tr in next st, ch 2. Repeat from * around, making 1 tr, ch 5, 1 tr in each corner.
