Medallion and Edge for Tea Cloth Pattern

This is arranged and shown below for a tea cloth but because of the medallion design it can be worked up for any size table cloth, either square or long. The design for this medallion is equally given to one color, or to two tones of a color, directions for which are given. "Silkine" Pearl Cotton in size 3 with a No. 5 hook, or "Silkine" Pearl Cotton in size 5 with a No. 6 hook, or Star Crochet Cord with a No. 5 hook may be used for making this attractive cloth. De Luxe or Gem Cotton is also lovely.

Large Squares: With ecru thread, ch 65, 1 sl st in 6th st from hook to form a 6-ch p, going through the left-hand loop of ch st only, ch 5, 1 sl st in same st to make a 2nd p. Now turn work around a little towards left, keeping right-side-up, and make a ch st across between p, bringing thread out in position to continue work. Ch 12, 1 sl st through left-hand loop of 6th st from hook for a p, ch 5, 1 sl st in same st. Now make a ch st across between these 2 p in same way as before. Ch 3, 1 sl st in 15th st of 1 ch from 1st p-group. (Ch 9, and make 2 p in 6th st from hook, a ch st across between p, ch 12 and 2 p in 6th st from hook and the following ch st, ch 3, 1 sl st in 11th st along long ch) 4 times. 2nd row: With work right-side-up, this row is worked from left to right across last row. Ch 20, 2 p in 6th st from hook, a ch st across them, ch 3, 1 sl st back to right in center st between p of last loop of last row, (ch 9, 2 p and ch st, ch 12, 2 p and ch st, ch 3, 1 sl st back to right in center of next loop of last row) 4 times, ch 9, 2 p and ch st, ch 14, 1 sl st back in, 4th st of ch to right of 1st p-group of last row. Fasten off, leaving a 1-inch length of thread hanging, to be worked over later. 3rd row: Join again to 4th st of last 14-ch counting from previous p, (ch 9, 2 p and the ch st, ch 12, 2 p and the ch st, ch 3, 1 sl st in center st between p of next loop of last row) 4 times, ch 9, 2 p and ch st, ch 12, 2 p and ch st, ch 3, sk p of next loop, 1 sl st in 4th st of ch beyond. 4th row: Repeat 2nd row, fastening the 14-ch at end to same st where last row started. Now repeat the 3rd and 4th rows 3 more times. 11th row: Join to 4th st of last 14-ch counting from previous p, (ch 10, 1 sc in center of next p-loop) 4 times, ch 10, sk p of next loop, 1 sc in 4th st of ch beyond. Fasten off, leaving a l-inch length of thread hanging. 12th row: Join beige thread to same corner st at end of last row. Now make (1 h tr, 1 tr, 3 d tr, 1 tr, 1 h tr, 1 sc, 1 h tr, 1 tr, 3 d tr, 1 tr, and 1 h tr) over each 10-ch loop around square, with 1 sc in each st between loops. Work over the ends of threads left from previous rows, thus fastening them off. Fasten off. 13th row: Join ecru thread to 2nd d tr of 1st scallop of last row, ch 3, 1 tr in same st, * (ch 5, a 2 tr cluster in center of next scallop) 9 times, ch 8, 1 tr tr in corner of square between scallops, ch 8 a 2 tr cluster in next scallop. Repeat from * around, j last 8-ch to 3-ch and tr at start of row. Fasten off.

Flower: Wind beige thread 4 times around ends of 2 crochet hooks held together, sl off and cover r with 12 sc, 1 sl st in front loop of 1st sc. 2nd row: This row is worked into the front loops of sc. Turn, (ch 4, 1 sl st in the front loop of next sc) 12 times. 3rd row: Turn, 1 sl st in back loop of same sc where last sl st was worked, (ch 7, 1 sl st in back loop of next sc) 11 times, ch 3, 1 tr in back loop of next sc. 4th row: (Ch 3, 1 sc in next 7-ch loop) 12 times. 5th row: (1 h tr, 3 tr, and 1 h tr) over each 3-ch, 1 sc in each sc between 3-chs. Fasten off, leaving a thread about 18 inches long. Thread this to a sewing needle and fasten flower in center of square.

Small Squares: Make a flower with beige thread the same as flower in large square. Fasten off thread. Join ecru thread to center of 1 scallop on edge of flower, (ch 5, 1 sc in next scallop, ch 4, 1 tr in next, ch 7, 1 tr in same scallop, ch 4, 1 sc in next) 4 times. Fasten off. Cut 24 rectangles of linen so that after they are narrow-hemmed, they will be the length of 1 side of large square and the width of 1 side of small square. Hem, press, and whip to squares. Around outside of cloth, connect corners of large squares with 25 ch. Whip these ch across ends of linen rectangles. When all is complete, j ecru thread to a corner of cloth to tr tr at corner of large square, going through back loop only, ch 3, 4 tr in same st, * 1 tr in each st of next 8-ch, (1 tr in next tr cluster, 1 tr in each st of next 5-ch) 9 times, 1 tr in next cluster, 1 tr in each st of next 8-ch, 1 tr in each st of 25-ch across end of linen rectangle. Repeat from * around cloth, putting 5 tr in tr tr at each corner of cloth. At end of row, j to 3-ch at start, 1 sl st in next 2 tr. 2nd row: Ch 9, 2 p in 6th st from hook and a ch st across between p, the same as was made in mesh of large squares, ch 12, 2 p and a ch st, ch 3, sk 7 tr, 1 sc in next, (ch 9, 2 p and a ch st, ch 12, 2 p and a ch st, ch 3, sk 11 tr, 1 sc in next) 29 times, ch 9, 2 p and a ch st, ch 12, 2 p and a ch st, ch 3, 1 sc in corner st. Repeat from start of row 3 times. Fasten off. 3rd row: Join to 1st p-loop of last row, (ch 9, 2 p and a ch st, ch 12, 2 p and a ch st, ch 3, 1 sl st in center st of next p-loop) repeated to next corner. Around corner, make a p-loop and a tr tr in corner of cloth between p-loops of last row, make another p-loop, 1 sl st in next p-loop of last row. Continue on around and fasten off. 4th row: Make the same as last row. At corners, make a p-loop and a tr tr in tr tr of last row, then make another p-loop and a sl st in center st of next p-loop of last row. Fasten off. 5th row: Join to center of a p-loop of last row, (ch 11, 1 sc in next loop) repeated around. At corners, make 11-ch, a tr tr in tr tr of last row, ch 11, 1 sc in next p-loop. Fasten off. 6th row: Join beige thread to a tr tr at 1 corner. Over each 11-ch make 1 h tr, 1 tr, 3 d tr, 1 tr, 1 h tr, 1 sc, 1 h tr, 1 tr, 3 d tr, 1 tr, and 1 h tr. Make 1 sc in each st between 11-ch. Fasten off.
