Butterfly Pot Holder Pattern

MATERIALS—D-M-C Pearl Cotton, Art. 116D, Size 8: 3 balls Orange Ombre No. 106 or American Beauty Ombre No. 107 (A), 1 ball Green Ombre No. 101 or No. 92 or Blue Ombre No. 93 (B); for 2 Pot Holders.

Steel Crochet Hook, Size 9.

GAUGE: 10 sc = 1 inch

CROCHETED FRAME—With A ch 248, keeping chain un­twisted, join (with slip st) to form ring. Rnd 1—Ch 1, 1 sc in joined ch, 1 sc in each of 61 chs, * [a corner group of 1 sc, ch 3, 1 sc] in next ch, 1 sc in each of 61 chs; rpt from * twice; end, 1 more sc in joined ch, ch 1, join with 1 dc in first sc (thus making joining sp at corner). Rnd 2—Ch 3, 4 dc in joining sp, † ch 1, skip next sc, 1 dc in next sc, ch 1, * skip next sc, [a Cluster of 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in next sc, ch 1, skip next sc, 1 dc in next sc, ch 1; rpt from * to next corner group, skip next sc, a Shell of 5 dc in ch-3 sp at corner; rpt from † around, in last rpt omit Shell, join (in top of ch-3) Rnd 3—Ch 3, work [1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in joined st, * ch 1, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, a Cluster in next dc; rpt from * once, ch 1, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, † a Cluster in ch-2 sp of next Cluster, ch 1, 1 dc in next dc between Clusters, ch 1; rpt from † to corner Shell, a Cluster in first dc of Shell, ch 1, 1 dc in next dc of Shell, ch 1, a Cluster in next dc of Shell, ch 1, 1 dc in next dc of Shell, ch 1, a Cluster in next dc of Shell, ch 1, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, a Cluster in ch-2 sp of next Cluster, ch 1, 1 dc in next dc between Clusters; continue in same way around, ending with ch-1, join in top of ch-3 of first Cluster. Rnd 4—Ch 1, slip st to center of ch-2 sp of first Cluster, ch 3, 1 dc in sp just used, ch 4, slip st in 4th ch from hook (Picot made), 2 more dc in same sp, ch 1, * 1 dc in next dc between Clusters, ch 1, [2 dc, a Picot, 2 dc] in ch-2 sp of next Cluster, ch 1; rpt from * around, join, fasten off. Prepare suitable pot holder and sew Crocheted Frame around edge as shown. BUTTERFLY—Large Wing (Make 2)—With B make a loop on hook, ch 2, work 2 hdc in 2nd ch from hook. Row 2—Ch 1, turn, 2 hdc in each of 2 hdc. Row 3—Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of 4 hdc. Row 4—Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first st, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 1 sc in next st. Edging—Ch 4, turn, 1 hdc in first st, ch 2, 1 dc in next st, ch 2, 1 dc in next st, ch 2, [1 hdc, ch 2, 1 hdc] in next st, work­ing along side, [ch 2 and 1 dc] in each row to point, ch 2, [1 hdc, ch 2, 1 hdc] at point, ch 2, work other side to correspond; end, ch 2, join in 2nd ch of ch-4, fasten off. Small Wing (Make 2)—Work same as Large Wing only omit row 3. Body—With A ch 3, slip st in 3rd ch from hook, ch 20, slip st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in each of next 14 chs, ch 7, slip st in 3rd ch from hook, fasten off. Assemble Butterfly together as shown in diagram, below. Make another Butterfly. Sew in place as shown. FLOWER (Make 4)—With B ch 4, join into ring, ch 1, [1 sc, ch 3, 1 dc, ch 3] in ring 4 times, join, fasten off. Sew in place as shown. With A embroider a French-knot in center of each Flower. RING—With A chain 2 inches, join into ring, 35 sc in ring, join, fasten off. Sew to back of Pot Holder at corner.
