MATERIALS—D-M-C Tatting, Art. 19: 2 balls Red Ombre No. 75 or any other D-M-C Ombre color. 1 suitable square Handkerchief with hemstitched or rolled edge.

Steel Crochet Hook, Size 13.

Rnd 1 (right side)—Make a loop on hook, 1 sc in any corner of handkerchief, work [ch 1, 1 sc] along edge to and including next corner (working about 9 ch-1 sps for every inch and having a multiple of 3 plus 2 ch-1 sps), [ch 2 and 1 sc] in same corner; continue in same way around, ending with ch 1, 1 more sc in first corner, ch 1, join with 1 sc in first sc of rnd (thus making a joining sp). Rnd 2—Ch 1, 1 sc in joining sp, work a Knot-st Loop as follows: * draw up loop on hook ¼-inch, yo, draw thru loop, insert hook between vertical bar and long loop and draw up a loop, yo, thru both loops on hook; rpt from * once (Knot-st Loop made), skip next 2 ch-1 sps, † 1 sc in next ch-1 sp, work a Knot-st Loop, skip next 2 ch-1 sps; rpt from † to ch-2 sp at corner, 1 sc in ch-2 sp, work a Knot-st Loop, 1 more sc in ch-2 sp just used (thus making a corner Knot-st Loop), work­ing along next side of Handkerchief, work a Knot-st Loop, skip next 2 ch-1 sps, 1 sc in next sp; continue in same way around, ending with 1 more sc in joining sp, work a Knot-st Loop, join (with slip st in first sc). Rnd 3—Ch 4, skip joined sc, * 1 sc in first loop of next Knot-st Loop, 1 sc in 2nd loop of same Knot-st Loop, work a Knot-st Loop; rpt from * to corner Knot-st Loop, 1 sc in first loop of corner Loop, work a Knot-st Loop, 1 sc in 2nd loop of same corner Loop (thus making a corner Knot-st Loop), work a Knot-st Loop, 1 sc in first loop of next Knot-st Loop, 1 sc in 2nd loop of same Knot-st Loop; continue in same way around, end­ing with Knot-st Loop, join. Rpt rnd 3 five times. Fasten off. Rnd 9—Edging—From right side, 1 dc in center st of any corner Knot-st Loop, f ch 4, slip st in top of dc just made, ch 5, slip st in same dc, ch 4, slip st in same dc, ch 4, 1 tr in next sc between Knot-st Loops, ch 4, slip st in top of tr just made, ch 5, slip st in same tr, ch 4, slip st in same tr, * ch 3, 1 sc in center st of next Knot-st Loop, ch 3, 1 tr in first sc of next 2 sc between Knot-st Loops, [ch 4, a slip st, ch 5, a slip st, ch 4, a slip st] in top of tr just made; rpt from * to next corner Knot-st Loop, ch 4, 1 dc in center st of corner Knot-st Loop; rpt from † around, ending with ch-4, join in first dc, fasten off.
