Set of 4 Mats each approx. 12 inches by 18 inches.

MATERIALS—D-M-C Pearl Cotton, Art. 116D, Size 5: 36 balls Green No. 909 or Green No. 911 (A), 3 balls Green No. 954 or Green No. 913 (B), 3 balls Ecru (C).

Steel Crochet Hook, Size 4.

GAUGE: 5 Puffs = 1 inch; 11 rows = 2 inches

Cut two 7-yard strands each of B and C, roll into small balls or wind on bobbins if preferred, for later use. With A ch 184 (about 18¼ inches), work a Puff in 4th ch from hook as follows: yo, draw up a loop in ch, yo, draw up a 2nd loop in same ch, yo, draw thru all 5 loops on hook, * ch 1, skip next ch, a Puff in next ch *; rpt between * 8 times, † drop A, attach a strand of B, with B ch 1, skip next ch, working over A, a Puff in next ch, drop B to back of work, with A ch 1, skip next ch, a Puff in next ch, drop A, attach a strand of C, with C ch 1, skip next ch, working over A, a Puff in next ch, drop C to back †, with A rpt between * 65 times; rpt between † once, with A rpt be­tween * 10 times (91 Puffs in row). Row 2—Ch 3, turn, a Puff in first ch-1 sp, * ch 1, skip next Puff, a Puff in next sp *; rpt between * 8 times, † drop A, with C ch 1, skip next Puff, working over A, a Puff in next sp, drop C, with A ch 1, skip next Puff, a Puff in next sp, drop A, with B ch 1, skip next Puff, working over A, a Puff in next sp, drop B, with A † rpt between * 65 times; rpt between † once; rpt be­tween * 10 times working last Puff in turning ch (91 Puffs). Row 3—Ch 3, turn, a Puff in first sp, [ch 1 and a Puff] in each of next 9 sps, * drop A, with B ch 1, working over A, a Puff in next sp, drop B, with A ch 1, a Puff in next sp, drop A, with C ch 1, working over A, a Puff in next sp, drop C, with A * [ch 1 and a Puff] in each of next 65 sps; rpt between * once, [ch 1 and a Puff] in each of next 10 sps. Rpt. rows 2 and 3 alternately until 11 rows. Fasten off A. Row 12—Attach a strand of B, with B ch 3, turn, a Puff in first sp, [ch 1 and a Puff] in each remaining sp, fasten off this strand of B. Row 13—Attach a strand of A, with A ch 3, turn and work as for row 3, fasten off A. Row 14—Attach a strand of C, with C ch 3, turn and work as for row 12, fasten off this strand of C. Row 15—Attach A, with A ch 3, turn and work as for row 3. Rpt rows 2 and 3 alternately until 53 rows. Rpt rows 12, 13, 14 and 15. Rpt rows 2 and 3 alternately until 67 rows from beginning. Fasten off.

FRINGE—Wind a strand each of B and C 6 times on a 1½-inch cardboard, cut at one end. Matching colors, tie a 6 strand Fringe at end of each colored stripe as shown. Block and steam.
