HOT PLATE SET

2 Mats; Large Mat approx. 9-inches, Medium Mat approx. 7½-inches.

MATERIALS—D-M-C Pearl Cotton, Art, 116D, Size 5: 6 balls Green No. 954 (A), 1 ball Green No. 909 (B), ½ ball each of Red No. 666 or No. 321, Yellow No. 742 or No. 743 and D-M-C Six Strand Cotton, Art. 117C: 1 skein each of Black No. 310 and White.

Asbestos Hot Plate Pads; one 8½-inch Pad and one 7-inch Pad.

Steel Crochet Hook, Size 7.

GAUGE: 9 sc = 1 inch; 19 sc rows = 2 inches

LARGE MAT

With A ch 15. Row 1 (see Row 1 of Circle C on Chart)—1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of next 13 chs. Row 2 (see Row 2 of Circle C on Chart)—Ch 5, turn, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of next 3 chs (4 inc. at beginning of row), 1 sc in each sc across, inc. 4 sts at end of row as follows: draw up a loop in same st as last sc made, yo, thru 1 loop on hook (thus making a base st), yo, thru 2 loops on hook (thus completing sc), * draw up a loop in base st of last sc made, yo, thru 1 loop (making base st for next sc), yo, thru 2 loops on hook (completing sc); rpt from * twice (4 inc. at end of row). Work row 3 as for row 2 (30 sc). Row 4—Ch 3, turn, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next ch (2 inc.), 1 sc in each sc across, inc. 2 sts at end of row as before (34 sc). Work as for Circle C on Chart to row 8. Row 8 (see Row 8 of Circle C on Chart)—Ch 2, turn, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook (1 inc.), 1 sc in each sc across, inc. 1 st at end of row as before (48 sc). Work as for Circle C on Chart to row 17. Row 17—Even row (see Row 17 of Circle C on Chart)—Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc across. Work to "Center" of Circle C on Chart, inc. where indicated. These 40 rows complete first half of Mat, for 2nd half, reverse Chart and work 9 more even rows as for Circle C on Chart. Row 50—Decrease row—† Ch 1, turn, slip st in first sc (1 dec. at beginning of row), ch 1, 1 sc in each sc to last sc, skip last sc (1 dec. at end of row) †. Work to end of Circle C on Chart, dec. where indicated. Fasten off.

EDGING—Rnd 1—(right side)—With A work a row of sc around Mat (having a multiple of 5 sts), join (with slip st in first sc). Rnd 2—Ch 1, 1 sc in front loop of each sc around (leaving back loops of rnd 1 free), join, fasten off. Rnd 3—From right side, with B 1 sc in each sc around, join. Rnd 4—Ch 1, 1 sc in joined st, 1 sc in each of next 4 sc, ch 4, slip st in last sc made (Picot made), * 1 sc in each of next 5 sc, a Picot; rpt from * around, join, fasten off. FACING FOR BACK OF MAT—From wrong side, with A working in free loops of rnd 1 of Edging, work 1 dtr (yo 4 times), in any st, ch 5, * skip 4 sts, 1 dtr in next st, ch 5; rpt from * around, join in first dtr. Rnd 2—Slip st to center ch of next ch-5 sp, ch 11, 1 dtr in center ch of next sp, ch 5, [1 dtr and ch 5] in center ch of each sp, join in 6th ch of ch-11, fasten off.

FINISHING—Slip Mat over Asbestos pad. With A chain about 20 inches, fasten off, run chain thru sps of rnd 2 of Facing, draw tightly and tie with a bow knot. Steam lightly.

APPLIQUÉD RIM OF BOWL—With B chain about 5½ inches, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of 4 chs, * work a Picot, 1 sc in each of 5 chs; rpt from * across, fasten off. Sew in place on Mat as shown.

RED FISH—With Yellow ch 18, draw up a loop in 2nd ch from hook, draw up a loop in next ch, yo, thru all 3 loops on hook, 1 sc in each of 6 chs, 3 sc in next ch, 1 sc in each of 6 chs, draw up a loop in each of next 2 chs, yo, thru all 3 loops on hook, fasten off. Row 2 (right side)—Turn, with Black make a loop on hook, draw up a loop in each of first 2 sts, yo, thru all 3 loops on hook (1 dec.), * draw up a loop in each of next 2 sts, yo, thru all 3 loops on hook (1 dec.) *, 1 sc in each of 4 sts, 3 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of 4 sts; rpt between * twice, fasten off. Row 3—From right side, with Red work 3 dec. over first 6 sts, 1 sc in next st, 3 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st, 3 dec. over last 6 sts. Row 4—Ch 1, turn, work 2 dec. over first 4 sts, 1 sc in next st, 3 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st, 2 dec. over last 4 sts. Row 5—Ch 1, turn, work 2 dec. over first 4 sts, 1 sc in next st, 2 dec. over last 4 sts. Row 6—Ch 1, turn, work 1 dec. over first 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, 1 dec. over last 2 sts. Row 12—Turn, draw up a loop in 2nd ch from hook, draw up a loop in next ch, yo, thru all 3 loops on hook, 1 sc in each of next 3 chs, 1 sc in each of 6 sc, 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of 6 sc, 1 sc in each of 3 chs, work 1 dec. over last 2 chs, fasten off. Row 14—From right side, with Red skip first 2 sc, 1 sc in each of next 8 sts, 3 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of 8 sts (leaving last 2 sts free). Row 15—Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of first 9 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of 9 sc. Eye—With White ch 6, join into ring, fasten off. Sew Eye in place as shown. Embroider a Black French knot in center of Eye. Make 1 Yellow Fish as illustrated; sew the 2 Fish in place as shown. BUBBLES (Make 7)—With White ch 6, join to form ring, fasten off. Sew in place as shown.

MEDIUM MAT

With A ch 9. Row 1 (see Row 1 of Circle B on Chart)—1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of 7 chs. Row 2 (see Row 2 of Circle B on Chart)—Work as for row 2 of Large Mat (16 sc). Row 3 (see Row 3 of Circle B on Chart)—Ch 4, turn, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of next 2 chs (3 inc. at beginning of row), 1 sc in each sc across, inc. 3 sts at end of row as before (22 sc). Work as for Circle B on Chart to row 8. Row 8 (see Row 8 of Circle B on Chart)—Work as for row 8 of Large Mat (40 sc). Work as for Circle B on Chart to row 14 . Row 14—Even row (see Row 14 of Circle B on Chart)—Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc across. Work to "Center" of Circle B on Chart, inc. where indi­cated. These 33 rows complete first half of Mat, for 2nd half, reverse Chart and work 6 more even rows as for Circle B on Chart. Row 40—Decrease row—Work between † of row 50 of Large Mat. Work to end of Circle B on Chart, dec. where indicated. Fasten off. Work same Edging and Facing as for Large Mat. Finish in same way as for Large Mat. APPLIQUÉD RIM OF BOWL—Work as for Large Mat only chain about 5 inches. FISH—Work as for Fish of Large Mat. BUBBLES (Make 5)—With White chain 6, join to form ring, fasten off. Sew in place as shown.

“AQUARIUM” POT HOLDERS

MATERIALS—D-M-C Pearl Cotton, Art. 116D, Size 5: 4 balls Green No. 954 (A), 1 ball Green No. 909 (B), ½ ball each of Red No. 666 or No. 321, Yellow No. 742 or 743 and D-M-C Six Strand Cotton, Art. 117C: 1 skein each of Black No. 310 and White; for 2 Pot Holders.

EDGING—Work same Edging as for Large Hot Plate Mat No. 7103. Block to size. APPLIQUÉD RIM OF BOWL—Work same as .for Large Hot Plate Mat only chain about 4½ inches. BUBBLES(Make 4)—With White chain 6, join to form ring, fasten off. Sew in place as shown. FISH—Work as for Fish of Large Hot Plate Mat. Pad Pot Holder with quilted or other suitable lining. RING—With B ch 10, join into ring, ch 1, * 3 sc in ring, a Picot; rpt from * 4 times, join, fasten off. Sew Ring to wrong side of Pot Holder.
