Approximate Sizes: Large Mat 9-inches, Medium Mat 8-inches and 9 by 13 inches Oval Mat.

COLORS: Rose Ombre No. 57 or Yellow Ombre No. 99 (A), Ivory No. 712 or Snow White (B) or any other D-M-C Colors.

MATERIALS—D-M-C Pearl Cotton, Art. 116D, Size 8: for Large Mat, 4 balls A, 1 ball B; for Medium Mat, 3 balls A, 1 ball B; for Oval Mat, 6 balls A, 1 ball B.

Steel Crochet Hook, Size 8.

NOTE: Use double strands of A and B to crochet any of these Mats (thus providing desired thickness).

LARGE MAT

Work all rnds from right side—CENTER—With B make a loop on hook, ch 2. Rnd 1 (right side)—12 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join (with slip st) in first sc. Rnd 2—Ch 3 (= 1 dc), working in back loop of sts, 1 dc in joined st, 2 dc in each sc around, join in top ch of ch-3 (24 dc). Rnd 3—Ch 3, working in back loop of sts, 4 dc in joined st, drop loop from hook, insert hook in top ch of ch-3 and draw dropped loop thru, ch 1 tightly (first Popcorn made), ch 2, skip next dc, work 5 dc in next dc, drop loop from hook, insert hook in first dc of 5 dc just made and draw dropped loop thru, ch 1 tightly (regular Popcorn made), * ch 2, skip next dc, a Pc in next dc; rpt from * around; end, ch 2, skip next dc, join (in top of first Pc); (12 Pc), fasten off. Rnd 4—Skip joined Pc, with A * work a Pc in first ch of next sp, ch 2, a Pc in next ch of same sp, ch 2, skip next Pc; rpt from * around, join (24 Pc), fasten off. Rnd 5—With B 1 dc in any sp between Pc's, ch 3, * 1 dc in next sp, ch 3; rpt from * around, join in first dc, fasten off. Rnd 6—Skip joined dc, with A * a Pc in next ch, ch 1, skip next ch, a Pc in next ch, ch 1, skip next dc; rpt from * around, join (48 Pc), fasten off. Work must measure 3 inches across center. Rnd 7—With B 1 dc in any sp between Pc's, ch 1, * 1 dc in next sp, ch 1; rpt from * around, join in first dc, fasten off. Rnd 8 Skip joined dc, with A a Pc in next ch, * ch 2, skip next dc, a Pc in next ch; rpt from * around, ch 2, join (48 Pc), fasten off. Rnd 9—Rpt rnd 5 only do not fasten off (48 sps). Rnd 10—Ch 3, skip joined dc, 3 dc in next sp, * 1 dc in next dc, 3 dc in next sp; rpt from * around, join in ch-3 (192 dc), fasten off. Rnd 11—With A 1 sc in joined st, 1 sc in each dc around, join in first sc.

EDGING—First SPOKE—Ch 1, Slip st in joined st and in each of next 4 sc, ch 26, a Pc in 3rd ch from hook, * ch 1, skip next ch, a Pc in next ch; rpt from * 10 times (12 Pc), skip next 2 sc on Mat, slip st in each of next 2 sc; ch 3, turn, skip first Pc, 1 sc in next sp, † ch 3, skip next Pc, 1 sc in next sp; rpt from † across; end, ch 3, 1 sc in turning ch (12 Loops); ch 3, turn, a Pc in center ch of first ch-3 Loop, [ch 2 and a Pc] in center ch of each Loop (12 Pc), skip next 2 sc on Mat, slip st in next sc (first Spoke made), ** slip st in each of next 5 sc on Mat. REGULAR SPOKE—Ch 25, to attach chain just made to previous Spoke, drop loop from hook, insert hook in sp after 4th Pc of previous Spoke (see A on diagram, below) and draw dropped loop thru (be sure not to twist ch-25), * ch 1, skip next ch on ch-25, a Pc in next ch; rpt from * 11 times (12 Pc), skip next 2 sc on Mat, slip st in each of next 2 sc; ch 3, turn, skip first Pc, 1 sc in next sp, † ch 3, skip next Pc, 1 sc in next sp; rpt from † 9 times, ch 3, 1 sc in turning ch (12 Loops), slip st in sp after 5th Pc of previous Spoke (see B on diagram) thus attaching Spokes together; ch 3, turn, a Pc in center ch of first ch-3 Loop, [ch 2 and a Pc] in center ch of each Loop, skip next 2 sc on Mat, slip st in next sc (regular Spoke made); rpt from ** around, join first slip st (16 Spokes), fasten off. Tack first and last Spokes in place to correspond. Block and steam lightly.

MEDIUM MAT

Work to end of rnd 7 of Large Mat, do not fasten off. Rnd 8—Ch 3, skip joined st, 2 dc in next sp, * 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next sp; rpt from * around, join in top of ch-3, fasten off. Rnd 9—With A 1 sc in joined st, 1 sc in each dc around, join in first sc, do not fasten off, work same Edging as for Large Mat (12 Spokes). Block and steam lightly.

OVAL MAT

Work all rnds from right side—CENTER—With B ch 42 (ch must measure 4 ¼ inches). Rnd 1—5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of 39 chs, 5 sc in end ch, matching sts, work 39 sc on other side of foundation ch, join (with slip st) in back loop of first sc. Rnd 2—Ch 3 (= 1 dc), working in back loop of sts, 1 dc in joined st, 2 dc in each of 4 sc, 1 dc in each of 39 sc, 2 dc in each of 5 sc, 1 dc in 39 sc, join in top of ch-3 (98 dc). Rnd 3—Ch 3, working in back loop of sts, 4 dc in joined st, drop loop from hook, insert hook in top of ch-3 and draw dropped loop thru, ch 1 tightly (first Pc made), ch 2, skip next dc, work 5 dc in next dc, drop loop from hook, insert hook in fir it dc of 5 dc just made and draw dropped loop thru, ch 1 tightly (regular Pc made), * ch 2, skip next dc, a Pc in next dc *; rpt between * 3 times, † ch 2, skip next 2 dc, a Pc in next dc †; rpt between † 12 times; rpt between * 5 times; rpt between † 12 times, ch 2, skip next 2 dc, join (in top of first Pc); (36 Pc), fasten off. Rnd 4—With A work a Pc in top of joined Pc, * ch 2, a Pc in 2nd ch of next sp, ch 2, a Pc in top of next Pc *; rpt between * 4 times, [ch 2 and a Pc] in each of 12 Pc; rpt between * 6 times, [ch 2 and a Pc] in each of 12 Pc; end, ch 2, a Pc in 2nd ch of next sp, ch 2, join (48 Pc), fasten off. Rnd 5—With B 1 dc in sp before joined Pc, [ch 3 and 1 dc] in each of next 10 sps, [ch 2 and 1 dc] in each of 13 sps, [ch 3 and 1 dc] in each of 11 sps, [ch 2 and 1 dc] in each of 13 sps; end, ch 3, join in first dc (48 sps), fasten off. Rnd 6—With A work a Pc in dc before joined dc, * ch 1, a Pc in center ch of next sp, ch 1, a Pc in next dc *; rpt between * 10 times, † ch 2, a Pc in first ch of next sp †; rpt between † 12 times, ch 2, a Pc in next dc; rpt between * 11 times; rpt between † 13 times; end, ch 2, join (72 Pc; work must measure 6½ inches by 2¾ inches across center), fasten off. Rnd 8—Skip joined dc, with A a Pc in next ch, * ch 2, skip next dc, a Pc in next ch; rpt from * around; end, ch 2, join (72 Pc), fasten off. Rnd 9—With B 1 dc in sp be­fore joined Pc, [ch 2 and 1 dc] in each sp around; end, ch 2, join in first dc (72 sps). EDGING—First Spoke—Ch 1, slip st in joined sc, slip st in next sc, ch 26 and work to end of First Spoke of Edging of Large Mat, * slip st in each of next 2 sc on Mat then work a Regular Spoke as for Edging of Large Mat *; rpt between * 7 times, † slip st in each of next 9 sc on Mat, work a Regular Spoke †; rpt between † once; rpt between * 9 times; rpt be­tween † twice, join in first slip st (22 Spokes), fasten off. Tack first and last Spoke in place to corres­pond. Block and steam lightly.
