Handkerchief Edging Pattern

MATERIALS—D-M-C Tatting, Art. 19: 4 balls Rose Ombre No. 48 or any other D-M-C Ombre color.

1 suitable 12-inch square Handkerchief with hem­stitched or rolled edge

1 Hairpin Lace Loom; ½-inch wide.

Steel Crochet Hook. Size 13.

Make a strip of Hairpin Lace 65 inches long (see in­structions supplied with Hairpin Lace Loom).

HEADING—Rnd 1 (wrong side)—With thread make a loop on hook, always twisting loops in same direction, work 1 sc thru first 2 loops, * ch 2, 1 sc thru next 2 loops; rpt from * 98 times (piece must measure same as one side of Handkerchief, having a multiple of 5 sc), ch 2; to form corner, [1 sc thru next 10 loops] twice, † ch 2, [1 sc thru next 2 loops, ch 2] 100 times, [1 sc thru next 10 loops] twice; rpt from † twice, ch 2, join (with slip st in first sc), fasten off. Cut off extra Hairpin Lace. Sew center of Hairpin Lace together firmly.

EDGING—Always twisting loops in same direction, from right side, 1 sc thru first 2 loops on opposite edge of Heading, * ch 2, 1 sc thru next 2 loops *; rpt between * until 101 sc have been made, † ch 4, 1 sc thru next 2 loops †; rpt between † 9 times (corner made); rpt between * 100 times; rpt between † 10 times; work other sides and corners to correspond, join. Rnd 2—Ch 1, 1 sc in joined sc, * ch 9, skip next 2 sc, 1 long tr in next ch-2 sp, ch 9, skip 2 sc, 1 sc in next sc *; rpt between * to first ch-4 sp at corner, † ch 9, skip next ch-4 sp, 1 long tr in next sc, ch 9, skip next ch-4 sp, 1 sc in next sc; rpt from † 4 times; rpt between * to first ch-4 sp at next corner; continue in same way around, ending with ch-9, join. Rnd 3—Ch 12, skip joined st, 1 tr in next long tr, ch 8, * 1 tr in next sc, ch 8, 1 tr in next long tr, ch 8; rpt from * around, join in 4th ch of ch-12, fasten off.

FLOWER BORDERFirst Flower—Ch 5, join into ring. Rnd 1 (right side)—Ch 1, 12 sc in ring, join. Rnd 2—Ch 4, yo twice, draw up a loop in joined st, [yo, thru 2 loops on hook] twice, yo twice, draw up a loop in same joined st, [yo, thru 2 loops] twice, yo, thru all 3 loops on hook, ch 4, slip st in same joined st, ** † slip st in each of next 2 sc on ring, ch 4, * yo twice, draw up a loop in same st as last slip st, [yo, thru 2 loops] twice; rpt from * once, yo, thru all 3 loops on hook **, ch 4, slip st in same st just used; rpt from † 4 times, slip st in next sc on ring (6 Petals made; mark 5th Petal), fasten off. 2nd Flower—Work as for first Flower to end of 5th Petal (mark 5th Petal); rpt between ** of First Flower, drop loop from hook, from right side, insert hook down thru top of 3rd Petal of previous Flower and draw dropped loop thru, ch 4, slip st in last st used on ring (thus completing 6th Petal), slip st in next sc on ring, fasten off. Make and attach Flowers as for 2nd Flower (always having 2 Petals free between joinings) until about 100 Flowers are joined. To attach Flower Border to Edging—From right side, work 1 tr in joined st of Edging, ch 6, drop loop from hook, from right side, insert hook in top of marked Petal of first Flower and draw dropped loop thru, ch 2, * 1 tr in next tr on Edging, ch 2, drop loop from hook, insert hook in top of next Petal on same Flower and draw dropped loop thru, ch 6, 1 tr in next tr on Edging *, ch 6, drop loop from hook, draw dropped loop thru marked Petal of 2nd Flower, ch 2; rpt between * once; continue to work and attach Flower Border to Edging, ending rnd with ch-6, join in top of first tr. Fasten off. Tack first and last Flower together. Matching corners, sew to Handkerchief.
