MATERIALS: J. & P. Coats or Clark's O.N.T. Pearl Cotton, Size 5, 8 balls of Ecru and 2 balls each of Light Steel Blue and Dark Yellow will make 2 hot plate mats about 6 x 8½ inches ... Steel Crochet Hook No. 4.

Starting at one long side, with 2 strands of Ecru, make a chain 10 inches long. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * tr in next ch, sc in next 5 ch. Repeat from * across until row measures 8½ inches, ending with tr and sc. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Skip 1st sc, dc in next tr, dc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in 1st dc, * tr in next dc, sc in each of next 5 dc. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in top st of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until piece measures 6 inches, ending with the 3rd row. Break off.

CHAIN TRIM ... With 4 strands of Yellow, make two chains each 1 inch long; two 3 inches long; two 5 inches long; two 7 inches long; three 9 inches long. With 4 strands of Blue, make two chains each 2 inches long; two 4 inches long; two 6 inches long; two 8 inches long; two 10 inches long. Starting with Yellow and alter­nating colors, draw these chains through tr loops diagonally across mat. Cut off extra chain and sew ends in place.

With 4 strands of Ecru, make a chain long enough to go twice around outer edges, allowing for turning cor­ners. Double this chain and sew adja­cent sides together. Sew double chain along edges over ends of Chain Trim.
