MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Baby Wool, 10 balls (¾ oz. balls) ... Bone Crochet Hooks No. 1 and No. 9 ... 4 yards of lace, 3 inches wide ... 1⅔ yards of ribbon.

GAUGE: 1 shell measures 1¼ inches across.

BLOCKING MEASUREMENTS:
Bust—37 inches; width across back at underarm—18 inches; width across each front at underarm—10 inches; width across back between armholes—14 inches; length of side seam—10 inches; length from shoulder to lower edge—17½ inches; width of sleeve at upper arm—13 inches; length of sleeve (including lace)—12½ inches.

BACK—Band ... Starting at nar­row end with No. 1 hook, ch 15. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in back loop of each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd row until piece measures 12½ inches. Do not break off but work 85 sc evenly across long edge of Band. Turn. Change to No. 9 hook and work in shell pattern as fol­lows: 1st row: Ch 4; in 1st sc make dc, ch 1 and dc (half shell made), * skip 2 sc, sc in next sc, skip 2 sc, in next sc make (dc, ch 1) 4 times and dc (shell made). Repeat from * across, ending with (dc, ch 1) twice and dc (half shell made). Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in 1st dc, * shell in next sc, sc in center dc of next shell. Repeat from * across, ending with shell, sc in last st of half shell. Ch 4, turn. 3rd row: Make a half shell in 1st sc, * sc in center dc of next shell, shell in next sc. Repeat from * across, ending with a half shell in last sc. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until piece measures 10 inches including Band, ending with 2nd row. Turn.

To Shape Armholes: 1st and 2nd rows: Sl st to center dc of next shell (1 half shell decreased), sc in same dc, shell in next sc, sc in center dc of next shell and continue in pattern across, ending with sc in center dc of last shell (another half shell decreased). Turn. At end of 2nd row, ch 4 to turn. 3rd row: Same as 3rd row of Back. Work in pattern until piece measures 6½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, ending with the 2nd row of pattern.

To Shape Shoulders: Sl st to center dc of 2nd shell, sc in center dc, shell in next sc and continue in pattern across, ending with sc in 2nd shell from end of row. Turn. Repeat this row once more. Break off.

RIGHT FRONT ... With No. 1 hook make a Band as for Back 7 inches long. Do not break off but work 49 sc evenly across long edge of Band. Turn. Change to No. 9 hook, work in pat­tern as for Back until piece measures 10 inches, including Band, ending with the 2nd row. Turn.

To Shape Armhole: Dec 1 half shell on one edge only for 2 rows (armhole edge), keeping opposite edge straight (this is front edge). Now work straight in pattern until piece measures 5 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, ending with the 2nd row.

To Shape Neck: Keeping armhole edge straight, dec 1 half shell on each row at front edge 4 times in all. Keep­ing neck edge straight, shape shoulder as for Back.

LEFT FRONT ... Work as for Right Front, reversing shapings.

SLEEVES ... Starting at bottom with No. 1 hook, make a chain 15 inches long (9 ch sts to 2 inches). 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across until 61 sc are made. Cut off remaining chain. Turn.

Change to No. 9 hook and work in shell pattern as for Back until piece measures 10 inches, ending with the 2nd row. Ch 4, turn.

To Shape Top: Dec a half shell at both ends of next 2 rows. Work straight in pattern until piece measures 13 inches in all, ending with the 2nd row. Now dec a half shell at both ends of each row, until 1 complete shell and 2 half shells remain. Break off.

Sew side and shoulder seams. Sew sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Work a row of sc along front and neck edges. Cut off 2 yards of lace. Shirr lace to measure same as neck edge and sew in place. Cut remainder of lace in half. Shirr each piece to measure same as sleeve edges. Sew together narrow edges of lace and sew shirred lace in place at bottom of sleeves. Cut ribbon in 6 equal parts. Sew one piece on each side of neck edge, one piece at center edge of each Front and one piece at top of bands. Tie into bows.
