MATERIALS: J. & P. Coats or Clark's O.N.T. Pearl Cotton, Size 5, 8 balls of Ecru and 6 balls of Nile Green … Steel Crochet Hook No. 4.

Large mat measures about 9 inches square; medium mat about 7 inches square; small mat about 5½ inches square.

Use thread double throughout

LARGE MAT—Motif (Make 16) … Starting at center with Ecru, ch 6. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 19 dc in ring. Sl st in top st of starting chain. 2nd rnd: Work in back loop of each st only. Ch 3,* 5 dc in next st, dc in next 4 dc. Repeat from * around. Sl st in top st of starting chain. Break off.

With a double strand of Green, work sc on free loop of each st of 1st rnd of Motif, having wrong side of sc's face center. Join and break off. With Green, work a rnd of sc in same manner along front loops of 2nd rnd. Sew 4 x 4 motifs, catching the free back loops on adjacent sides.

BORDER … With Ecru, work 3 rnds of dc along outer edges, working on back loop of each st only and mak­ing 5 dc in center st of each of 4 corners.

With Green, work a rnd of sc along free loops of first 2 rnds of Border. Work a rnd of sc in same manner along front loops of last rnd of Bor­der. Join and break off at end of each rnd.

MEDIUM MAT … Make 3 x 3 motifs and finish as for Large Mat.

SMALL MAT … Make 2 x 2 motifs and finish as before.
