Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8.

Measurements … Height at head, about 6 inches. Length from nose to tail, about 9 inches.

Sides of Body (Make 2) … Starting at hind leg, ch 21. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch to within last ch, 2 s c in last ch. Ch 1, turn. 2nd to 6th rows incl: S c in s c to within last s c, 2 s c in last s c. Ch 1, turn. 7th row: S c in each s c. Ch 1, turn. 8th, 9th and 10th rows: Repeat 6th, 7th and 6th rows (28 sts on 10th row). 11th and 12th rows: Same as 7th row. 13th row: S c in each of 1st 20 s c. Ch 1, turn. 14th, 15th and 16th rows: Same as 7th row. 17th row: Same as 2nd row. Repeat the last 4 rows (14th to 17th rows incl.) 4 more times. 34th row: Same as 2nd row (this is neck edge). 35th, 36th and 37th rows: Same as 7th row, but ch 6 at end of 37th row (thus starting front leg). 38th row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch and each s c across. Sides of Head (Make 2) … Starting at lower edge of neck, ch 13. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: S c in each s c. Ch 1, turn. 5th row: S c in each s c to within last s c, 2 s c in last s c. Ch 1, turn. 6th and 7th rows: Same as 2nd row, but ch 9 at end of 7th row. 8th row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch and each s c across, Ch 1, turn. 9th row: Same as 5th row. 10th and 11th rows: Repeat 8th and 9th rows. 12th to 15th rows incl: Same as 2nd row. 16th row: Skip 1 s c, s c in s c across. Ch 1, turn. 17th row: Same as 2nd row. 18th and 19th rows: Repeat 16th and 17th rows. 20th row: Skip 1 s c, s c in s c to within last s c, sl st in last s c. Fasten off.

Top of Head … Starting at one end, ch 11. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch. Ch 1, turn. 2nd to 25th rows incl: S c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. Hereafter dec. 1 s c at beginning of each row until 1 s c remains—to dec., skip 1 sc. Fasten off.

Under-Section of Head … Starting at neck edge, ch 9. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch. Ch 1, turn. 2nd to 15th rows incl: S c in s c across. Ch 1, turn. Now dec. 1 s c at beginning of each row until 1 sc remains. Fasten off.

Ears … Starting at wider end (top), ch 16. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch. Ch 1, turn. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: S c in each s c. Ch 1, turn. Dec. 1 s c at beginning of each row until 7 s c remain. Fasten off.

Tail … Starting at top, ch 14. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch. Ch 1, turn. 2nd and 3rd rows: S c in each s c. Ch 1, turn. 4th to 13th rows incl: S c in 1st 6 s c, dec. 1 s c, s c in next 5 s c, 2 s c in last s c. Ch 1, turn. Fasten off.

Sew together the 4 sections of the body, and stuff with cotton batting. Sew up the back. Sew the 4 sections of the head together, stuff, and sew securely to body. Double the ears lengthwise and sew to upper sides of head. Sew up the tail, stuff, and sew securely in place. Embroider nose, mouth and eyes in satin stitch with Six Strand. Glass eyes may be used. Tie ribbon around neck (see illustration).
