Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8.
½ yd. lining material to match solid color.
A small pillow, about 10 inches in diameter and 2 inches deep.

Starting at center, with shaded color ch 4. 1st rnd: 11 d c in 4th ch from hook, join last d c with sl st to 4th st of ch-4. 2nd rnd: Ch 3 (to count as d c), d c in sl st, 2 d c in each d c around (24 d c). 3rd rnd: Ch 3, * in next d c make a pc st—to make a pc st, ch 1, make 5 d c, drop loop from hook, insert hook in ch-1 and draw dropped loop through—thread over, insert hook in next d c, thread over and draw through 2 loops. Drop shaded color, attach solid color and draw through the 2 loops on hook; working over shaded color to conceal it, make 3 solid color d c in next d c (2 d c increased), completing 3rd d c with shaded color. With shaded color make d c in next d c, concealing unused color as before. Repeat from * around. Join. 4th rnd: Ch 3 and complete a pc st, * d c at tip of next pc st, pc st in next d c, d c in next d c, drop shaded color, attach solid color; 3 d c in next d c (2 d c increased), drop solid color, pick up shaded color; d c in next d c, pc st in next d c. Repeat from * around. Join. Continue in this manner, making 3 d c in center d c of each solid color section and alternating d c's and pc sts across shaded sections until there are 6 pc sts in each section. Next rnd: Ch 3, * pc st in next d c, d c in next pc st, pc st in next d c, d c in next pc st; drop shaded color, pick up solid color, d c in next 2 d c, 3 d c in next d c, 2 d c in next 2 d c; drop solid color, pick up shaded color; (d c in next pc st, pc st in next d c) 3 times, d c in next pc st. Repeat from * around. Join. Continue in this manner, increasing as before and making 2 additional solid color d c in solid color sections on each rnd until all shaded sts are replaced by solid sts. Break off shaded color and make solid color d c's around, increasing 12 d c on each rnd (be careful not to have increases fall over previous ones) until piece measures about 11 inches in diameter. Do not fasten off but work edging as follows:

Edging1st rnd: * Ch 10, s c in d c about ¾ inch away from where ch-10 started. Repeat from * around. 2nd rnd: Make 12 d c in each loop around. Fasten off.

Cover pillow with lining material. Sew crocheted piece to top, having scallops extend beyond edges of pillow.
