Starting at tip of crown, ch 2, make 6 s c in 2nd ch from hook. 1st rnd: 2 s c in each s c. 2nd and 3rd rnds: S c in each s c. 4th rnd: * S c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c (an increase). Repeat from * around (18 s c). 5th, 6th and 7th rnds: Repeat 2nd rnd. 8th rnd: * S c in next 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around (24 s c). 9th, 10th and 11th rnds: Repeat 2nd rnd. 12th rnd: * S c in next 3 s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around (30 s c). 13th, 14th and 15th rnds: Repeat 2nd rnd. 16th rnd: Repeat 8th rnd (40 s c). 17th and 18th rnds: Repeat 2nd rnd. 19th rnd: * S c in next 4 s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around (48 s c). 20th and subsequent rnds: S c in each s c, increasing 8 s c at equal distances apart on each rnd until there are 96 s c in the rnd. Sl st in next st, ch 4, turn. Now work in pattern as follows: 1st row: * Insert hook in next s c and pull loop through; insert hook in next s c and pull loop through; thread over and draw through 2 loops on hook, thread over and draw through remaining 2 loops, ch 1 (1 group made). Repeat from * around (48 groups). Join with sl st to 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: * Insert hook in space before single vertical thread of previous row and pull loop through; insert hook in space after single vertical thread and pull loop through; thread over and draw through 2 loops on hook, thread over and draw through remaining 2 loops, ch 1. Ch 4, turn. 3rd row: * Work 7 groups; then inc. 1 group as follows: Insert hook in same space where last loop was pulled through, and pull loop through; insert hook in space before next vertical thread and pull loop through; finish group as before. Insert hook in same space where last loop was pulled through, and pull loop through; insert hook in space after next vertical thread and pull loop through; finish group as before. Repeat from * around, join (54 groups). Ch 4, turn. 4th row: Repeat 2nd row (54 groups). 5th row: Work as before, increasing 6 groups at equal distances apart. Join. Ch 4, turn. 6th row: Work around without increasing, join. Ch 4, turn. Repeat the last 2 rows alternately until there are 102 groups. Then work 4 rows without increasing. Break off.
