Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 2 balls of White and 6 balls of shaded color.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 7 or 8.

This material is sufficient for a set of 6 coasters.

Base … With 2 strands of White ch 2. 1st rnd: 7 s c in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c around. 3rd rnd: * S c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c (increase). Repeat from * around. 4th and subsequent rnds: S c in each s c around, making necessary increases to keep work flat, until there are 64 s c in the rnd and piece measures 2¾ inches in diameter. Sl st in next st, fasten off. Attach 2 strands of shaded color, ch 1, turn. With wrong side of base toward you, make a long s c in each s c around—to make a long s c, work s c in base of each s c of previous rnd. Join with sl st. Ch 5 (to count as d tr), 4 d tr in same place as sl st, drop st from hook, insert hook back in 5th st of ch-5 and draw dropped loop through, ch 1 to fasten. * Ch 1, skip next long s c, 5 d tr in next long s c, drop loop from hook, insert hook back in 1st d tr of this group and draw dropped loop through, ch 1 to fasten. Repeat from * around (32 d tr-groups). Join with sl st to 5th st of ch-5 first made. Ch 1, s c in fastening ch of 1st group, s c in ch-1 sp, ** s c in next fastening ch, s c in ch-1 sp. Repeat from ** around; join. Fasten off.
