Irish Crochet Collar and Cuffs Pattern #2021

Materials:
Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet, 4 balls, White, size 50.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 10.

Medallions: Ch 10, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 4 (to count as tr), 23 tr in ring, join with sl st. 2nd rnd: * Ch 5, s c in 4th ch from hook for picot, ch 5, skip 1 tr, s c in next (this makes a picot-loop which will be referred to as "p-loop"). Repeat from * 10 more times. 3rd rnd: 1 p-loop, s c under 1st p-loop of previous rnd, * d tr under next loop, ch 4 (to count as tr), 11 tr under d tr (this forms a shell). Ch 5, s c under same loop as d tr was worked, 2 p-loops. Repeat from * 3 more times, working the last p-loop in the 1st tr of 1st shell.

4th rnd: * Skip 4 tr of shell, 1 p-loop in next tr, skip 5 tr, 1 p-loop in last tr of shell, p-loops in each of next 2 loops, 1 p-loop in 1st tr of next shell. Repeat from * 3 more times, making last p-loop in 1st p-loop made in this rnd. 5th rnd: Work shell as in 3rd rnd, ch 5, s c in same loop as d tr was worked, 4 p-loops, repeat from * 3 more times, making last p-loop in 1st tr of shell.

6th rnd: 2 p-loops in shell as before, 4 p-loops, 1 p-loop in 1st tr of next shell, 2 p-loops in shell, p-loops in each of next 2 p-loops, 1 d tr in next loop, ch 4, join with sl st back in st after picot of p-loop just made, and complete shell with 10 more tr. (This extra shell gives a scallop effect when medallions are joined.) Ch 5, s c in same loop as d tr was worked. Finish rnd with p-loops and fasten off.

Make 12 of these medallions for the set (6 for collar and 3 each for cuffs). In addition, make 2 corner medallions for the collar. Work same as for other medallions, and in 6th rnd work the extra shell as before, and also work an extra shell between the 3rd and 4th shells of the row below.

Cuffs: Join 3 medallions for each cuff. To join, place medallions next to each other, with the extra shells coming at the top. Attach thread in loop at lower edge of 1st medallion, ch 3, s c in corresponding loop of adjacent medallion, ch 3, s c in next loop of 1st medallion. Continue in this way until 7 loops are joined. When the 3 medallions are joined, attach thread to 1st p-loop of corner shell at top of cuff. Work a row of p-loops across top edge of cuff. Then continue around entire cuff with ch 7, * d c in next mesh, ch 4, repeat from * around. At lower edge corners work 2 d c in same mesh with ch-8 between.

Finishing edge: Working across edge at wrist, make 4 s c under ch-loop, a ch-4 p, * 4 s c under next loop, ch-4 p. Repeat from * to corner, and over the ch-8 loop work 4 s c, p, 4 s c. Then ch 8, turn, sl st to s c before p, turn and under the ch-8, work 5 s c, p, 5 s c. * Under next loop work 3 s c, p, 3 s c, over next loop work 5 s c. Ch 8, turn, sl st in s c directly above d c between 2 loops made, turn, and under the ch work 5 s c, p, 5 s c. Repeat from * 6 more times. Work 2 loops each with 3 s c, p, 3 s c. 2 loops each with 3 s c. 2 loops each with 3 s c, p, 3 s c. Work 3 of the ch-8 loops over the next medallion and work to correspond to other side.

Collar: Join medallions as for cuffs, with 2 medallions between the corner medallions at front (corner medallions having the 2 extra shells each), and 2 medallions at each side. Shape to fit neckline (square in front, rounded in back). If medallions do not meet in back, work p-loops as desired. Attach thread at neck edge and work a row of p-loops around lower edge. Make edging same as for cuffs, working neckline same as lower edge of cuffs, and rest of edge with ch-8 loops.
