MATERIALS: J. & P. Coats or Clark's O.N.T. Pearl Cotton, Size 5, 2 balls of Ecru and 1 ball of Red … Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

CUP … With Ecru, ch 35 (to measure about 4 inches). 1st row: 3 dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each ch across, 3 dc in last ch. Ch 3, turn. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: 3 dc in 1st dc, dc in each dc across, 3 dc in top st of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 5th row: Skip 1st dc, dc in each dc across, dc in top st of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the 5th row until piece measures 6½ inches. Continue as before but work off 3 dc as 1 dc at both ends of each row 3 times. Break off.

CORD … With Red, make a chain about 2 yards long and sl st in each ch across. Break off. Trim cup with cord as in illustration. Write "¼ cup", "½ cup" and "¾ cup" on tracing paper. Pin tracing paper in position on cup. Sew cord over lettering. Tear off paper.

HANDLE … With Red, make a chain 5 inches long. Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Break off. Cover this strip with cord, form handle of it and sew in place.

PADDING … Cut flannel or cotton batting slightly smaller, and lining material slightly larger, than crocheted piece. Place padding between crocheted piece and lining. Turn under edges of lining and sew to edges of crocheted piece with neat over-and-over stitches. For pot holders consisting of 2 crocheted pieces, insert padding between crochet and sew up edges.
