Potholder Pattern #9441

MATERIALS: J. & P. Coats or Clark's O.N.T. Pearl Cotton, Size 5, 2 balls of Spanish Red J. & P. Coats Red Bias Trim … Steel Crochet Hook No. 7 ... A bone ring … Scraps of green and brown felt.

1st row: Starting at blossom end, ch 15, 3 dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each ch across, 3 dc in last ch. Ch 3, turn. 2nd and 3rd rows: 3 dc in 1st dc, dc in each dc across, 3 dc in top st of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: Dc in each dc across and in top st of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 5th row: Same as 3rd row. Repeat the 4th and 5th rows alternately 3 more times. Now work straight until piece measures 6½ inches. Next row: Work off 3 dc as 1 dc, dc in each dc across to last 3 dc, work off last 3 dc as 1 dc. Last row: Sc in next 5 sts, work off 3 dc as 1 dc, dc in each dc to center of row, sc in next st 5 rows down (this is stem end of apple), dc in each remaining dc of row to within 8 sts, work off 3 dc as 1 dc, sc in next 5 dc. Break off. Tack the first 4 rows of the blossom end at center.
     Bind edges of pot holder with bias trim. Cut 1 small and 1 large leaf of green felt and 3 very narrow strips for stems. Draw veins on leaves with pencil and sew leaves and stems in place. Cut brown material to form trimming for blossom end and sew in place. Sew on bone ring.

PADDING … Cut flannel or cotton batting slightly smaller, and lining material slightly larger, than crocheted piece. Place padding between crocheted piece and lining. Turn under edges of lining and sew to edges of crocheted piece with neat over-and-over stitches. For pot holders consisting of 2 crocheted pieces, insert padding between crochet and sew up edges.
