SAUCER … Starting at center with White, ch 23 (to measure 2½ inches). 1st rnd: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each ch, 6 dc in last ch. Working along opposite side of foundation chain, dc in each ch, ending with 3 dc where first 2 dc were made. Sl st in top st of turning chain. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, (2 dc in next dc) twice (3 dc increased), dc in each dc, making 2 dc in each of 6 dc at other end of oval (6 more dc increased) and ending with 2 dc in each of last 3 sts (12 dc increased in rnd). Join. Continue making dc around, increasing 6 dc evenly apart along each end of oval and joining each rnd, until piece measures 3½ x 6 inches. Break off. Attach Blue and make sc around, increasing 4 sc evenly apart at each end of oval until piece measures 5 x 7½ inches. Break off.
CUP … Starting at bottom with White, ch 13. 1st rnd: 3 dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each ch, 4 dc in last ch. Ch 3, turn. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rnds: Dc in 1st dc, dc in each dc across, 2 dc in top st of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 5th, 6th and 7th rnds: Skip 1st dc, dc in each dc across, dc in top st of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 8th and 9th rnds: Dc across, decreasing 1 dc at both ends of row—to deca dc, work off 2 sts as 1 st. 10th rnd: Sc in first 3 sts, half dc in next 3 sts, dc in each st to within last 6 sts, half dc in next 3 sts, sc in last 3 sts. Break off. Attach Blue to end st of foundation chain, ch 3, 3 dc in same place, dc in each st of foundation chain, 4 dc in last st. Break off.
CORD … With Blue, make a chain about 20 inches long. Sl st in each ch across. Do not break off but measure off a length of this Cord to form front rim border of cup (see illustration) and work 3 rows of sc along this marked off section. Break off. With White, embroider 5 double lazy-daisy sts on this front rim border. Pin this border in place and pin the Cord along outer edges of cup and sew in place. Form Handle by sewing together 3 layers of remaining Cord and sew in place.
With White, embroider 4 groups of 5 double lazy-daisy sts each on Blue border of Saucer. Pad cup and sew in place. Sew on bone ring.
PADDING … Cut flannel or cotton batting slightly smaller, and lining material slightly larger, than crocheted piece. Place padding between crocheted piece and lining. Turn under edges of lining and sew to edges of crocheted piece with neat over-and-over stitches. For pot holders consisting of 2 crocheted pieces, insert padding between crochet and sew up edges.
