CENTER … Ch 45. 1st row: Holding back on hook the last loop of each tr make tr in 8th ch from hook and in next 4 ch, thread over and draw through all loops on hook—a cluster made, * ch 7, skip 3 ch, holding back on hook the last loop of each tr make tr in next 5 ch, thread over and draw through all loops on hook—another cluster made. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 2, tr in last ch (5 clusters). Ch 6, turn. 2nd row: * 5 tr in tip of next cluster, ch 3. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 2, tr in 3rd st of turning chain. Ch 9, turn. 3rd row: Skip 4 tr of first 5-tr group, * make a cluster over the next tr, the ch-3 and the 1st tr of next 5-tr group, ch 5, skip 3 tr. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 5, tr in 2nd st of turning chain (4 clusters). Ch 8, turn. 4th row: * 5 tr in tip of next cluster, ch 3. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 3, tr in 5th st of turning chain. Ch 6, turn. 5th row: Holding back on hook the last loop of each tr make tr in next 3 ch, tr in next tr, thread over and draw through all loops on hook—a 4-tr cluster made; * ch 7, skip 3 tr, make a cluster over the next tr, the ch-3 and the 1st tr of the next 5-tr group. Repeat from * across, ending with a 4-tr cluster over last tr of last 5-tr group and the next 3 sts of turning chain, ch 2, tr in next ch. Ch 6, turn. The last 4 rows (2nd to 5th rows incl) constitute the pattern. Work straight in pattern until 18 rows are complete. Omit chain at end of 18th row. Turn.
Keeping continuity of pattern, decrease 1 cluster at both ends of the next row and every 2nd row thereafter until 2 clusters remain—to decrease a cluster at beginning of row, sl st across to 5th tr of 1st tr group, work in pattern across, ending in 1st tr of last tr group. Break off. Attach thread to opposite side of starting chain and work the last 6 rows to correspond. Do not break off.

EDGING1st rnd: * Ch 5, skip 1 st, sc in next st. Repeat from * around having 175 loops on rnd. 2nd and 3rd rnds: Sl st to center of 1st loop, * ch 5, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. 4th rnd: Sl st to center of 1st loop, * (ch 12, sc in next loop) twice; ch 16, sc in next loop, ch 20, sc in next loop, ch 16, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. 5th rnd: Sl st to center of first ch-12 loop, * ch 2, sc in next ch-12 loop, ch 5, sc in ch-16 loop, ch 5, sc in ch-20 loop, ch 5, sc in ch-16 loop, ch 5, sc in next ch-12 loop. Repeat from * around. 6th rnd: * 2 sc in ch-2 sp, 2 sc in next ch-5 loop, ch 1, 4 dc in same loop, 3 dc in next ch-5 loop, ch 1, 4 tr in same loop, ch 4, 4 tr in next ch-5 loop, ch 1, 3 dc in same loop, 4 dc in next ch-5 loop, ch 1, 2 sc in same loop. Repeat from * around. 7th rnd: Sl st in next 2 sc, ch 4, * sc in next dc, ch 3, skip 3 dc, sc in next sp, ch 3, dc between next dc group and tr group, ch 3, tr in next ch-4 loop, (ch 3, tr in same loop) 5 times; ch 3, dc between next tr group and dc group, ch 3, skip 3 dc, sc in next sp, ch 3, skip 3 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, skip 3 sc, sc between next 2 sc. Repeat from * around. 8th rnd: Sl st to center of next loop, * ch 5, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Sl st in 1st ch. Break off. Starch lightly and press.
