Hot Plate Mats & Potholder Pattern #4-89

ROYAL SOCIETY "EVERSHEEN", 400-yard ball: 1 ball of Ecru and 1 ball of Green will make 1 large mat, 2 small mats and 1 pot holder.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 7. Lining material.

LARGE MAT … Starting at center, with Ecru, ch 98. 1st row: Holding back on hook the last loop of each d tr make d tr in 5th ch from hook and in next 4 ch, thread over and draw through all loops on hook—a 5 d tr cluster made, * ch 3, dc in next 3 ch, ch 3, make a 5-d tr cluster over the next 5 ch. Repeat from * across, ending with a 5 d tr cluster, ch 5, sl st in last ch. Break off. 2nd row: Attach Green to tip of 1st cluster, sc in same cluster, * ch 1, 5 tr in center dc of next 3-dc group, ch 1, sc in tip of next cluster. Repeat from * across. Break off. 3rd row: Attach Ecru to 1st sc, ch 5, * make a 5-d tr cluster over the next 5 tr, ch 3, dc in next ch, dc in next sc, dc in next ch, ch 3. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 5, sl st in last sc. Break off. Repeat the last 2 rows (2nd and 3rd rows) alternately until 16 rows have been made. Break off. Attach Ecru to opposite side of starting chain and work other side to correspond. With Green, make a row of sc evenly all around edges. Using Mat as a pattern, cut a cardboard piece for stiffening and, allowing ½ inch to turn under on all sides, cut a piece of lining material to correspond. Insert cardboard between Mat and lining and sew in place.

SMALL MAT (Make 2) … Starting at center with Ecru, ch 82. Complete as for Large Mat, making 12 rows on each side of starting chain.

POT HOLDER … Starting at center with Ecru, ch 74. Complete as for Large Mat, making 10 rows on each side of starting chain. Line pot holder.
