Runner measures 12 x 23 inches; each Place Mat 10 x 16 inches.

GAUGE: 4 sps measure 1 inch; 4 rows measure 1 inch.

PLACE MAT (Make 2) … Starting at upper edge, ch 186 to measure 14 inches. 1st row: Dc in 9th ch from hook, (ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next ch) 59 times (60 sps). Ch 5, turn. 2nd to 8th rows incl: * Dc in next dc, ch 2. Repeat from * across, ending with a dc in 3rd st of turning chain. Ch 5, turn (60 sps). 9th row: Make 37 sps, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc (bl made over sp), make 21 more bls, 2 dc in turning chain, dc in 3rd st of turning chain. Ch 3, turn (1st row on chart). 10th row: Dc in next 3 dc (bl made over bl), make 22 more bls, 37 sps. Ch 5, turn. 11th row: Make 37 sps, 2 bls, ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc (sp made over bl), make 20 more sps. Ch 5, turn. 12th row: 21 sps, 2 bls, 37 sps. Ch 5, turn. 13th row: 37 sps, 2 bls, 9 sps, 3 bls, 9 sps. Ch 5, turn. Follow chart from the 6th row to top, having 37 sps on left side of Mat which do not appear on chart.

EDGING ... 1st rnd: Ch 3, 2 dc in each sp, dc in each dc and in st at end of each row around, making 5 dc in each corner st. Sl st in top st of ch-3. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, dc in each dc around, making 5 dc in center dc of each 5-dc group. Sl st in top st of ch-3. Break off.

RUNNER … Starting at short end, ch 150 to measure 11 inches. 1st row: Dc in 9th ch from hook, (ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next ch) 20 times; dc in next 6 ch, (ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next ch) 25 times. Ch 5, turn. Follow chart to top, starting with the 3rd row and making 25 sps on left side of Runner which do not appear on chart. Now work the 1st and 2nd rows of chart. Work 29 rows of sps for center of Runner. Now work the first 32 rows of Runner, placing the design diagonally opposite and reversing design.
