COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. "SPEED-CRO-SHEEN" MERCERIZED COTTON, Art. C.44: 1 ball each of No. 10-A Canary Yellow and No. 131 Fudge Brown.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).

Yellow felt . . . Bone ring.

GAUGE: 5 ½ sc make 1 inch; 6 rows make 1 inch.

LARGE BANANA (Make 4) . . . With Canary Yellow, ch 29, drop Canary Yellow, attach Fudge Brown and ch 6. 1st row (Wrong side of work): With Fudge Brown sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 5 ch, keeping unused thread on wrong side of work, drop Fudge Brown, pick up Canary Yellow, sc in each of next 13 ch, 2 sc in next ch (an inc made), sc in each remaining chain. Ch 5, turn (tip of banana). On all even rows, work in back loop of each st. 2nd row: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 3 ch, 2 sc in next sc, sc in each remaining sc to within last 6 sc, 2 sc in each of the next 2 sc, sc in each of next 4 sc, drop Canary Yellow, pick up Fudge Brown, sl st in each of next 6 sl sts. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: With Fudge Brown sl st in first 3 sl sts, drop Fudge Brown, pick up Canary Yellow, sc in each remaining st to within last 4 sl sts, sl st in each sl st. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Sl st in first 4 sl sts, sc in each sc to within last 4 sc, drop Canary Yellow, pick up Fudge Brown, sc in next 3 sc, sl st in each remaining st. Ch 1, turn. 5th row: With Fudge Brown sl st in first 4 sts, drop Fudge Brown, pick up Canary Yellow, sc across to within last 4 sl sts, increasing 1 sc in center of row, sl st in each of last 4 sl sts. Ch 1, turn. 6th and 7th rows: Repeat 4th and 5th rows. Break off at end of 7th row. With Fudge Brown and right side facing, make 5 sc along tip of banana. Break off.

SMALL BANANA (Make 3) . . . With Canary Yellow, ch 26, drop Canary Yellow, attach Fudge Brown and ch 6. 1st row (Right side of work): Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, break off Fudge Brown, pick up Canary Yellow, sl st in next 3 ch, sc in next 5 ch, 2 sc in each of the next 2 ch, sc in each remaining chain to within last 3 ch, sl st in next 3 ch. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each st across to within last 4 sl sts, sl st in each sl st. Ch 1, turn (tip). 3rd row: Working in back loop of each st, sl st in first 4 sl sts, sc in each sc across to within last 3 sts, increasing 1 sc in center of row, sl st in last 3 sts. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately 2 times more. Break off at end of last row. With Fudge Brown and right side facing, make 6 sc along edge of tip. Turn. Next row: Sl st in each sc across. Break off.

With Fudge Brown, embroider markings in stem st on Bananas as illustrated. Arrange Bananas in a bunch, having Large Bananas overlap Small Bananas with tips hanging free and first and 4th Large Bananas meeting at top edge of bunch.

STEM . . . With Fudge Brown and right side facing, make 9 sc across top edge of first and 4th Bananas, ch 8, sl st in first sc. 1st rnd: Sc in each of next 2 sc, work off next 2 sc as 1 sc (a dec), sc in next 4 sc, 8 sc in the ch-8 sp. 2nd to 5th rnds incl: Sc in each sc around, decreasing 2 sc evenly spaced on each rnd. Break off at end of last rnd, leaving a 10-inch strand. Thread into a needle and sew up opening. Line with felt. With Brown, sc closely around bone ring. Sew in place.
