COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. "SPEED-CRO-SHEEN" MERCERIZED COTTON, Art. C.44: 1 ball each of No. 1 White, No. 12 Black, No. 43 Dk. Yellow, No. 61-D Nu-Ecru and a few yards of No. 131 Fudge Brown.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).

Red, blue and brown felt for lining...Scraps of white, black and green felt...Sequins and beads for eyes...4 bone rings.

S-700 LION . . . Starting at center with Dk. Yellow, ch 2. 1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 3rd rnd: *2 sc in next sc (1 sc increased), sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Sc in each sc, increasing 6 sc evenly on each rnd until piece measures 5½ inches in diameter. Now work in rows for chin. 1st row: Sc in next 20 sc. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Skip first 2 sc, sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until 10 sc remain, then sc all around. Join and break off.

EARS . . . Mark off center sc at top of head, attach Dk. Yellow to 13th sc following marker, sc in same place and in next 6 sc. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Skip first sc, sc in each sc across. 5th and 6th rows: Repeat last 2 rows once more. 7th row: Skip first 2 sc, sc in next 3 sc, sl st in each remaining sc and along side of Ear. Break off. Attach thread to 13th sc on other side of marker and, working toward chin, make other ear to correspond. Attach thread to any sc and sl st closely around entire pot holder. Join and break off.

MANE . . . With wrong side facing and using a double strand of Dk. Yellow, attach thread to first st below ear and, working around lower part of head, make sc in same place, * insert hook in next st, with middle finger of left hand hold thread down against front of work to form a ¾-inch loop, thread over and draw loop through, thread over and complete an sc. Repeat from * around to other ear. Break off. Attach thread to top of head and work Mane as before.

EYES . . . Cut 2 half circles of black felt and 2 of white felt slightly smaller. Sew sequins to center and sew in place. Cut a piece of red felt for tongue and sew in place.

WHISKERS . . . Cut 12 strands each of Black and Yellow, each 5 inches long. Sew in place.

Line with brown felt. With Dk. Yellow, make sc closely around bone ring. Sew in place.
