MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 1 ball of White, Ecru or any color.
J. & P. COATS or CLARK'S O.N.T. SIX STRAND EMBROIDERY FLOSS, 1 skein each of light and dark colors.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.
A bone ring.
GAUGE: Back: 9 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch. Palm: 4 pc sts make 1 inch; 2 pc st rows and 3 sc rows make 1 inch.
BACK OF HAND . . . Starting at wrist, ch 36. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (35 sc). Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 1 ¼ inches. To shape for thumb, inc 1 st at same edge every other row until there are 49 sts. Starting at thumb, work across 14 sts. Ch 1, turn. Work over these 14 sts for 1 inch. Dec 1 st at both ends of each row until 4 sts remainto dec an sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc. Fasten off. Attach thread where sts were divided and work over remaining 35 sts until piece measures 6 ½ inches from foundation chain. Dec 1 st at both ends of each row until 13 sts remain. Fasten off.
EMBROIDERY . . . Thread a blunt pointed needle with light Six Strand Embroidery Floss. Starting at outer wrist edge (away from thumb), run needle under horizontal part of sc's, moving over 1 st on each row to have stripe slant diagonally across piece. Fasten off at end. * Run a dark strand 1 st to the left and parallel to light stripe. Skip next 5 sts, work a light stripe, starting with next st. Repeat from * until entire Back has double diagonal stripes. Now work stripes in the opposite direction to form diamond pattern. Fasten off.
PALM . . . Starting at wrist, ch 32. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (33 sts). Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: 5 dc in 1st sc, drop loop from hook, insert hook in ch preceding the 5 dc and draw dropped loop through (pc st made), * dc in next sc, ch 1, pc st in next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in each pc st, in each dc and in 3rd st of turning ch (33 sts). Ch 4, turn. Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until piece measures 1 ¼ inches, ending with a pc st row. Now work in pattern as before, increasing 2 sc at end only of each sc row, until there are 43 sts on the rowto inc 2 sc, make 2 sc in each of the last 2 sts of row. On next sc row, inc 1 sc at end (44 sts).
For Thumb, work in pattern over 13 sts only for 1 inch, ending with a pc st row. Now continue working in pattern, decreasing 2 sc at both ends of every sc row, until 5 sts remainto dec 2 sts, work off 2 sts as 1 st twice. Fasten off.
Attach thread where sts were divided and work in pattern over remaining 31 sts until piece measures 6 ½ inches from foundation chain, ending with a pc st row. Dec 3 sts at both ends of each sc row until 13 sts remain. Now work without decreasing a pc st row and an sc row. Fasten off.
Place right sides of both pieces together and sew edges together, leaving wrist edge open. Turn right side out. Sew ring to edge of wrist away from thumb.
