Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).

Each block measures 12 inches square.
Rug measures 38 x 62 inches.

PLAIN SQUARE (Make 7) … Starting at bottom make a chain 15 inches long. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across until row measures 12 inches. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece is square. Break off.

RIDGE SQUARE (Make 8) … Starting at bottom, work as for Plain Square until first row has been com­pleted. Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: Skip first sc, tr in back loop of each sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Insert hook in back loop of first tr and in free loop of first sc on preceding row, sc in same place, * make an sc through back loop of next tr and free loop of next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 4th and 5th rows: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. At end of 5th row, ch 4, turn. Repeat 2nd to 5th rows incl until piece is square, ending with 3rd row. Break off.

   Sew 3 rows of 5 squares together, alternating ridged and plain squares as shown in illustration.

BORDER…1st rnd: Attach thread to any corner, sc closely around, making 3 sc in each corner. 2nd to 5th rnds incl: Sc in each sc around, making 3 sc in center sc of each corner. At end of 5th rnd, join and turn. SI st in each sc around. Join and break off. Block to measurements.
