Here are Boots and Slippers for use around the house that will permit you to add to your wardrobe • not tax the facilities of hard pressed manufacturers. The soles are double layers, of Enterprise Yarn, crocheted firm and heavy • they may be sized with lacquer (like the back of a rug) or stiffened with a layer of fiber board between the 2 pieces of the sole • cut the board to fit after crocheting. No. 1 Steel Crochet Hook used for all shoes.
SOLES: These slippers all are to be crocheted on the same sole. Adult or children's soles are alike except for changes where fewer sts are required for the smaller sizes,—use figures for child's sizes at points where indicated in instructions.
Measure length of foot—plus ¼"—make a chain 2½" shorter (childs; 2" shorter) than measurements. 2 sc in second st from hook, sc in each st to center ch, hdc in 4 sts (childs; 2 sts) dc to fourth st (childs; third st) from end, hdc in 2 sts (childs; in next st) 5 sc in end st. On other side of chain, hdc in 2 sts (childs; in next st) dc in each st opposite dc on other side, hdc in 4 sts, (childs; 2 sts) sc to end. In both loops, 3 sc in first sc, 2 sc in next, and continue with 5 rows (childs; 4 rows) of sc around. Increase 3 sc around toe in each row, with 2 sc between inc. Inc 3 sc at heel in each row, with sc between increases.
ROW 7: (Childs; Row 6) 1 sl st in both loops of each sc. Fasten off. Make a second piece, to be exactly same size and sew together back-to-back thru 1 loop of each sc on edge.
PIRATE BOOTS
MATERIALS: 2 balls each Dk. Green and Yellow (or other colors).
SOLES: Make under-sole in Green: First two rows of top-sole Green, last rows Yellow. Sew together with Yellow.
TOP: With top sole toward you, join Green to center st at heel end, 1 sc in 1 loop of each sl st around, number to divide evenly by 4. Sl st in first sc. Work following rows in both loops.
ROW 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in sl st, sc around. Sl st in first sc. Repeat once.
ROW 4: Decrease 4 sc in toe, with two sc between decreases.
ROW 5: Ch 1, (hdc in next sc, 3 dc in next, hdc in next, sc in next) around. Sl st in l-ch. Fasten off.
ROW 6: In back loops, sl st in Yellow in next hdc, ch 3, * hdc in next st, sc in next, hdc in next, (dc in next st, skip sc in angle, dc in next hdc) holding the last loop of these 2 dc on hook, thread over thru 3 loops (a Cluster). Repeat from * around to toe. If Green shells are centered on toe, work from ** to ** in 5 spaces on toe:— ** Skip next dc, (dc in next hdc, skip sc in angle, dc in next hdc) made into a Cluster, skip next dc, sc in tip of shell. ** If one Green shell is centered on toe work from ** to ** in 4 spaces. Finish row the same as first half. After final hdc, dc in next st, holding last two loops on hook, insert hook in first 3-ch, yarn over and thru all loops.
ROW 7: Mark 9 center sts on toe. Ch 1, turn, and in both loops, sc around. Across 9 sts on toe, make (dc in 2 sts for a Cluster) twice, 1 dc in next st, (dc in 2 sts for a Cluster) twice.
ROW 8: Repeat Row 7, but decrease 2 sts at heel, with 4 sc between decreases.
ROW 9: Mark 11 center sts on toe. Across these make (a 2-dc Cluster) twice, a 3-dc Cluster, and (a 2-dc Cluster) twice. Repeat this row 4 times.
ROW 14: Sc around, but decrease 1 sc on toe.
ROW 15: Decrease 2 sc on toe. Repeat 14 or 15 until 52 sts remain.
CUFF: Right-side-out, make 13 shells around as in Row 5. Fasten off.
ROW 2: Turn, and in back loops, join Green to last hdc and make reverse shells around as in Row 6, * repeating from ** to ** on each side of center shell.
ROW 3: Ch 3, turn and in both loops, dc in sl st, hdc in next, sc in next, and make shells around as in Row 5. End with 1 dc, sl st in 3-ch. Fasten off. (Repeat Row 2 to * and Row 3 in Yellow and again in Green) twice.
POM PONS: Wrap color around a cardboard 1¼ inches wide 35 times, (make 4) slip from cardboard, tie firmly in center, cut all ends even, fluff yarn by rolling in the palm of hand and fasten to ends of ties.
