Here are Boots and Slippers for use around the house that will permit you to add to your wardrobe • not tax the facilities of hard pressed manufacturers. The soles are double layers, of Enterprise Yarn, crocheted firm and heavy • they may be sized with lacquer (like the back of a rug) or stiffened with a layer of fiber board between the 2 pieces of the sole • cut the board to fit after crocheting. No. 1 Steel Crochet Hook used for all shoes.
SOLES: These slippers all are to be crocheted on the same sole. Adult or children's soles are alike except for changes where fewer sts are required for the smaller sizes,—use figures for child's sizes at points where indicated in instructions.
Measure length of foot—plus ¼"—make a chain 2½" shorter (childs; 2" shorter) than measurements. 2 sc in second st from hook, sc in each st to center ch, hdc in 4 sts (childs; 2 sts) dc to fourth st (childs; third st) from end, hdc in 2 sts (childs; in next st) 5 sc in end st. On other side of chain, hdc in 2 sts (childs; in next st) dc in each st opposite dc on other side, hdc in 4 sts, (childs; 2 sts) sc to end. In both loops, 3 sc in first sc, 2 sc in next, and continue with 5 rows (childs; 4 rows) of sc around. Increase 3 sc around toe in each row, with 2 sc between inc. Inc 3 sc at heel in each row, with sc between increases.
ROW 7: (Childs; Row 6) 1 sl st in both loops of each sc. Fasten off. Make a second piece, to be exactly same size and sew together back-to-back thru 1 loop of each sc on edge.
CASUALS
MATERIALS: 1 ball Red, 3 balls Blue (or other colors).
Make under-sole and first 5 rows of top-sole Blue, last 2 Red. Sew with Red.
TOP: With top of sole toward you, and thru back loop of each sl st, join Blue to center st at heel end, 1 sc in each st around, having an even number of sc, sc in first sc. Work balance of rows thru both loops.
ROW 2: * 2 dc in next sc, holding last loop of each dc on hook, yarn over and thru 3 loops on hook (a puff st), sc in next sc, pulled down tightly, letting puff st puff out on back (outside of shoe). Repeat from * around. After final puff st, sl st in first sc. End each puff row in this way.
ROW 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in sl st, sc around. Dec 6 sc at toe, with 2 sc between dec. Sl st in first sc.
ROW 4: Ch 1, turn, sc in sl st, (a puff st, 1 sc) around. Puff sts should be exactly above those in previous row. Repeat Rows 3 and 4. Fasten off.
ROW 7: Mark center st on toe. Count to 19th st on each side and mark. Working on outside, join to next puff st, sc around to puff st previous to opposite mark, dec. 2 sts at heel, with 1 sc between dec.

ROW 9: Ch 1, turn, skip last sc, sc around to second from end.
ROW 10: Ch 1, turn, skip last sc, 1 sc, (a puff st, 1 sc) around to second from end. Repeat Rows 9 and 10 twice.

ROW 16: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc, (a puff st, 1 sc) around. Repeat Row 15. Fasten off. Join Red and repeat Rows 16, 15 and 16. Fasten off. Repeat Row 15 in Blue, 3 sc in corner, then make sc around front opening, dec 6 sts at toe, with 2 sc between dec. 3 sc in top corner. Fasten off. Join Red, (ch 1, sl st in next sc) around.
VAMP: In Red, ch 12, 5 sc on ch, 3 sc in next sc, sc in 5 sts. Draw Blue thru loops, turn and over Red, * skip last sc, sc in 5 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in 4 sc, (insert hook in next sc, yarn over and pull thru) twice, yarn over and thru 3 loops, making a double sc (a decrease of 1 st). Make all dec in this way. Draw Red up taut and thru loop, turn and over Blue, repeat from * alternately in Red and Blue thru fourth Red row. Join Blue, turn, skip last 2 sc, 4 sc, 3 sc in center, 3 sc, a double sc dec in next 2 sc. Continue with 4 sc on each side of center 3 sc, thru seventh Red row. Dec to 3 sc on each side of center 3 sc and continue thru tenth Red row. Dec to 2 sc on each side of center 3 sc and continue thru eleventh Blue row. Fasten off. Sew in position.
