Materials: Choose one of the following threads in White or Ecru:
Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet, size 30, 10 balls.
J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, size 30, 8 balls.
J. & P. Coats Big Ball Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, size 30, 4 balls.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 9.
4¾ yds. scrim, 38 inches wide.
This amount is sufficient for 1 pair of curtains.
When completed, each curtain (2 curtains make 1 pair) measures about 72 inches long and 36 inches wide. Insertion strips measure 4 inches, 3 inches and 2 inches wide, respectively.
Gauge: 5 sps or bls make 1 inch; 5 rows make 1 inch.
Cut scrim into 2 pieces 83 inches long. Cut off selvages and make a narrow hem at both long sides of each piece. Make a 7-inch hem for bottom (taking care to turn in sufficient cloth to prevent raveling). Then make a 3-inch hem at top. Run a row of stitching, 1½ inches from top, across both curtains, thus forming heading and casing for rod.
4-inch Strips. (Make 2). Starting at narrow end, ch 61. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each of next 2 ch (1 bl made), d c in each of next 3 ch (another bl made). Ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next ch (1 sp made); make 2 more sps, 1 bl, 7 sps, 7 bls (22 d c), turn. 2nd row: Ch 3 (to count as d c), d c over each of next 21 d c, sp over next sp, 2 d c in sp, d c over next d c (1 bl made), bl over next sp, 4 sps over 4 sps, bl over bl, 3 sps over 3 sps, 2 bls over 2 bls. Ch 3, turn. Hereafter follow chart A from "X" until 20 rows have been completed. Then repeat pattern on chart, for width of curtain. Break off.
3-inch Strips (Make 2). Ch 46 and follow chart B until piece measures width of curtain. Break off.
2-inch Strips (Make 2). Ch 31 and follow chart C until piece measures width of curtain. Break off. Pin strips on curtains as follows: Pin 4-inch strips directly above 7-inch hem; then pin 3-inch strips on, leaving 4 inches of cloth free above 4-inch strips; then allow 3 inches of cloth and pin 2-inch strips on curtains (see illustration). Sew strips to curtains and cut away excess scrim at back (allowing ½ inch at each edge for hem). Turn edges under and make neat hems.
