Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 3 balls of Dk. Brown and 1 ball of Ecru.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 9.

When completed, tie-back measures about 18 inches along upper edge and 5½ inches deep at center.

Gauge: 10 sts make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.

Tie-Back. Starting at upper edge, with Dk. Brown make a chain to measure about ½ yd. long. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each ch until 160 d c are made (counting turning ch as 1 d c). Cut off remaining chain. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: D c in each d c across. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Holding Ecru along top of 2nd row, with Dk. Brown make d c in each of 9 d c, thus concealing Ecru. Thread over, insert hook in next d c and draw loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops, drop Dk. Brown, pick up Ecru, thread over and draw through remaining 2 loops (10 Dk. Brown d c made). With Ecru make d c in each of 10 d c, carrying Dk. Brown thread concealed in d c's and completing last d c with Dk. Brown as before. Then make 5 Dk. Brown d c, * 10 Ecru d c, 5 Dk. Brown d c. Repeat from * twice, then make 20 Ecru d c, ** 5 Dk. Brown d c, 10 Ecru d c. Repeat from ** 3 more times (always completing last d c of a color-group with thread of next color-group), drop Ecru at back, end row with 10 Dk. Brown d c. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: Work d c's across, having Ecru over Ecru and Dk. Brown over Dk. Brown, but break off Ecru after last d c of last Ecru group has been made. Ch 3, turn. 5th and 6th rows: With Dk. Brown, d c in each d c across, turn. 7th row: Sl st to 11th d c, ch 3, d c in next d c. Hereafter follow chart across to within 10 d c from end of row. Chart shows only one half of design. To make second half of each row, repeat first half, starting from middle and working back. (Black sections represent Dk. Brown; white sections represent Ecru.) Continue to follow chart until tie-back is completed. Make another tie-back same as this. Fasten to window frame with push pins.
